Lee Yoon Taek’s works reflect various images of intellectuals. He expresses what he wants to tell the world through the characters in his books, saying what it takes to be an intellectual on social responsibility and duty. At an interview with Kim Nam-Seok and using Cho Nam-Myung in his discussion, Lee Yoon Taek stated that there was a clear purpose in his attempt to illustrate what being an intellectual entails after having looked into the deeper thoughts of Cho Nam-Myung. Using the role of intellectuals expressed by the rural scholar Cho Nam-Myung, the societal responsibilities and duties required by the modern intellectual can be organized into the following areas. First, desire for philosophical knowledge. Rather than valuing the actual acquisition of knowledge, intellectuals must constantly desire philosophical enlightenment in order to keep up with the ever-changing nature of knowledge. The first line of the first paragraph in Cho Nam-Myung’s book starts with his reading text with his students. We can construe this act of reading not only as simply the act of studying a subject, but also the act of desiring knowledge and acquiring it. Second, knowing oneself. It can be said that in order for a person to achieve intellectual status, one must start by knowing one’s place in the world and his or her connection with it. Finding himself in dire straits in which meal skipping was common, Cho Nam- Myung’s wife, who would be ashamed to look upon the face of her mother-in-law due to their poverty, suggested moving into her parents’ home. After taking her up on her suggestion, he shamelessly told his story to his students during a class and upon doing so recognized his own flaws which could be understood as something that all intellectuals should do. Third, practice what you preach. Practicing what you preach refers to affirmative action. In Cho Nam-Myung’s time, high ranking ministers and officials would bite their tongue in any situation that arose in which the king himself had made a mistake. However, Cho Nam-Myung, knowingly risking a death sentence, would speak up and denounce the king’s mistakes. He made a written statement denouncing in detail what he generally felt was political wrongdoing and corruption. In order to do the right thing, a true intellectual must not fear death and inform his or her leader of any mistakes made by the latter. Cho Nam-Myung, unlike others in his time, practiced what he preached even in the face of death. The intellectual that Cho Nam-Myung portrays is one, who studies in order to maintain a constant desire for philosophical knowledge, and is enlightened enough through one’s understanding of one’s place in the world to be able to practice what he or she preaches. Lee Yoon-Taek’s vision of today’s intellectuals leading our society follows in the footsteps of Cho Nam-Myung, in that they must be active seekers of philosophical knowledge rather than passive ones.

이윤택의 작품 속에는 다양한 지식인의 모습이 나타나 있다. 그는 세상에 대하 여 하고 싶은 자신의 말을 연극 속에 등장하는 지식인을 통해 하고 있으며, 지식인 의 사회적 책무에 대해 이야기하고 있다. 이윤택은 김남석과의 대담에서 조남명을 통해서, 조남명이라는 선비의 속을 꿰 뚫어봄으로써, 지식인의 모습을 그리겠다는 명확한 목적이 있다고 하였다. 「시골 선비 조남명」에 나타나 있는 지식인의 역할을 통해 현대를 살아가는 지식인에게 요구하는 사회적 책무를 다음과 같이 정리할 수 있다. 첫째, 지적 탐구이다. 지식이란 절대적인 가치를 지니는 것이 아니라 시대에 따 라 변해 왔기 때문에 변해가는 지식을 알기 위해서 지식인은 끊임없이 지적 탐구를 해야 한다. 「시골선비 조남명」의 제1막 1장은 조남명이 유생들과 글 읽는 것으로 시작된다. 글 읽는 행위는 학문을 연구하는 행위이며 지적 탐구를 하는 행위라고 할 수 있다. 둘째, 자신에 대해 알기이다. 지식인이 되는 것은 자신이 어떤 존재인지 분명하 게 아는 것에서부터 시작된다고 할 수 있다. 끼니 메우기가 곤란해 어머님 뵙기가 민망하다며 친정으로 옮기자는 아내의 말을 따르는 모습과 유생들에게 강론을 하면서 자신의 부끄러운 부분을 숨기지 않고 드러내며 자신의 잘못을 인정하는 모습 에서 자신에 대해 하는 지식인의 모습을 볼 수 있다. 셋째, 실천이다. 실제로 행동으로 행하는 것을 실천이라고 한다. 조남명은 당대 조정에 있던 중신들이 임금의 잘못에 대해 입을 다물고 있자 죽음을 무릅쓰고 상소 를 올린다. 그는 상소에서 평소에 자신이 느꼈던 정치의 잘못과 부조리 등을 낱낱 이 지적하여 추상같이 준엄한 필치로 상소를 하였다. 진정한 지식인이라면 지도자 의 잘못에 대해 바른말을 해야 하고, 옳은 일을 위해서는 죽음도 두려워하지 않아 야 한다. 다른 사람들이 하지 못한 일을 조남명은 죽음을 각오하고 실천하였다. 「시골선비 조남명」에 나타난 지식인의 모습은 꾸준히 공부를 하여 지적 탐구 를 하고 자신에 대해 정확하게 알며 자신이 깨우친 것을 생활 속에서 실천하는 것 이다. 이윤택은 현대 사회를 이끌어가는 지식인은 꾸준히 노력하여 지적 탐구를 게 을리 하여서는 안 된다는 것을 조남명의 모습을 통해 보여주고 있다고 할 수 있다.
