This paper aims at re-illuminating the life and performance of Lee Chea-jeon, and her status in theatrical performance history. Recordings and data about her can be said that reliable documents do not exist. This problem led to the distortion of drama history, causing biased interpretations about the actress. Thereupon, this work is to restore Lee Chea-jeon's life on a basis of objective historical materials, and to reconstruct the trustworthy data about properties of her performance and her theatrical career. Examining the position of Lee Chea-jeon pioneering the role of an actress in the history of theater, I have found the trouble early actresses must have been faced with and problems in the theatrical and cinematical world. This study will also serve as supplementing some part of the history of actors, which is the weakest point in the Korean dramatical history.

본고는 이채전의 생애와 연기 그리고 연극사적 위상을 재조명한 논문이다. 이채전에 대한 기록과 자료는 객관적으로 신뢰할 수 있는 기록이 전무한 상태이 다. 이러한 문제점은 연극사의 기술로까지 이어져 배우사의 왜곡을 가져왔다. 이 에 본고는 이채전의 생애를 객관적 자료의 도움으로 복원하고, 그 연기 특성과 연기 이력을 신뢰할 수 있는 기록들로 재구하였다. 선구자적 입장에 놓여있던 이채전의 연극적 위상을 고찰하면, 초창기 여배우들이 겪어야 했던 고난과 연극 영화계의 문제점을 발견할 수 있다. 또 이러한 연구는 한국 연극사의 가장 취약 점인 배우사의 한 단면을 보완하는 효과를 가져올 것이다.
