Today, the remarkable development of science and technology has given mankind the possibility to evolve into ‘human after human’, ‘post-human’ by improving or eliminating his own vulnerability by his own power. Thus the theoretical discussion of ‘human vulnerability’ seems to be able and have to provide some answers to the practical questions related to artificial evolution. But contrary to these expectations, the quest for ‘meaning human vulnerability’ will only tell us what the huge and pressing problem we are facing today. In fact, the solution of the practical problem will be given from the answer to the question “What is human?” raised from the inner tension with the dual meaning of humanity. After all, the question is “What is human?” again, and our choice of humanity. We will first analyze the etymological meaning of the word ‘vulnerability’ and define ‘vulnerability’ as a ‘condition of human being’ and ‘the limit which human tries to overcome’ and see how that definition changes in the era of human enhancement. And although these discussions can not answer the practical question posed in relation to human enhancement, they will show that they urgently recall the traditional question, “what is human?”, to solve this problem.

오늘날 과학기술의 놀라운 발전은 인류에게 스스로의 힘으로자신의 취약함을 개선 혹은 제거하여 ‘인간 이후의 인간’, ‘포스트-휴먼’으로 진화할 수 있는 가능성을 제시하였다. 따라서 ‘인간적 취약함’에 대한 논의는 인공적 진화와 관련된 실천적 질문에 대해 어떤 답을 제공할 수 있고, 또 제공해야만 하는 것처럼보인다. 그러나 이러한 기대와는 달리, ‘인간적 취약함의 의미’에대한 탐구는 우리가 현재 마주하고 있는 거대하고 긴급한 문제가 무엇인지를 알려줄 뿐이다. 문제의 해결은 인간다움의 이중적 의미가 지닌 내적 긴장으로부터 제기되는 “인간이란 무엇인가?”라는 질문에 대한 대답으로부터 주어질 것이다. 결국 문제는 다시 “인간이란 무엇인가?”이며, 인간다움에 대한 우리의 선택이다. 우리는 우선 취약함이란 말의 어원적 의미를 분석하면서 취약함을 ‘인간의 존재 조건’이자 ‘인간이 도전하여 극복하고자 하는 한계’로 정의하고, 그러한 정의가 인간 강화 시대에 어떻게 변화되는지 살펴볼 것이다. 그리고 이러한 논의가 인간 강화와 관련되어 제기된 실천적 차원의 문제에 답을 줄 수는 없지만, 이 문제의 해결을 위해 “인간이란 무엇인가?”라는 전통적문제를 시급히 다시 소환하고 있다는 점을 보여줄 것이다.
