초록

영어

This study is about “interpreter politics” during the United States Army Military Government (1945-1948). This period is often referred to as the era of interpreter politics or interpreter’s politics and it is not difficult to find expressions such as these as well as historical figures who were recorded as being “interpreters” in contemporary Korean History. But almost no attention has been given to this issue in the field of Interpretation and Translation Studies in Korea. It is with this context in mind that this article takes an academic approach to interpreter politics and one of the most representative figure between interpreters during this period. In this paper, Chapter 2 explores interpreter politics with regards to their formation, agents amongst leading figures like foreign missionaries and Korean elites who had studied abroad, especially in the United States and the positive and negative influences they exerted; and Chapter 3 takes a historiographical approach to Lee Myo Mook and his professional career as an interpreter for John, R. Hodge, the United States military governor of that period.
