In this study, we analyzed the relationship between regional export concentration and economic growth (per capita GDP) for 16 provinces in Korea during 2001 ~ 2016. The results of the study are as follows; First, the concentration of exports by region in Korea is very diverse, regardless of the concentration of national exports. This seems to reflect the industrial structure of each region and the difference in industrial distribution among regions. Second, there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between export intensity and per capita GDP. This means that there is a level of export concentration that maximizes GDP per capita of the region. Third, the effect of export concentration on economic growth varies depending on the industrial structure of each region and changes over time. If the results of this study are interpreted from the viewpoint of regional economic development, some degree of export specialization is needed for regional economic development, but unconditional specialization is not always right.

본 연구에서는 한국의 16개 광역시․도를 대상으로 2001년 ~ 2016년 사이의 지역별 수출집중도와 경제성장(1인당 GDP) 사이의 관계를 분석하였다. 연구결과에 의하면 첫째, 한국의 지역별 수출집중도는 국가 전체 수출의 집중도와 상관없이 지역별로 매우 다양하게 나타나고 있는데, 이는 각 지역의 산업 구조 및 지역 간 산업 분포의 차이를 반영하는 것으로 보인다. 둘째, 수출집중도와 지역의 1인당 GDP 사이에는 역 U자 형태의 관계가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이것은 지역의 1인당 GDP가 가장 커지는 수출집중도 수준이 존재한다는 것을 의미한다. 셋째, 수출집중도가 경제성장에 미치는 영향은 각 지역의 산업 구조나 시간에 따른 변화 등에 따라 다르게 나타나고 있다. 본 연구의 결과를 지역 경제 발전 관점에서 해석한다면 지역의 경제 발전을 위해 어느 정도의 수출전문화가 필요하지만 무조건적인 전문화가 항상 옳다고 볼 수는 없다는 것이다.
