The aim of this study was to research the relation between Korean vowels' characteristic produced by Vietnamese migrant females and Sociolinguistic variations. For this, Twenty Vietnamese migrant females participated. Subjects were instructed to use comfortable conversational levels of pitch and loudness while sustaining the 7 Korean vowels /a/, /i/, /u/, /e/, /o/, /ɔ/, /ɯ/. Speech samples were analyzed using CSL system on linear predictive coding(LPC). Intrinsic formant frequency, formant frequency(F1, F2, and F3), and vowel working space area were used for searching acoustic characteristics and subjects answered survey questionnaire written in Vietnamese. The main results of this study are as follow: Age and length of residence in Korea of the Sociolinguistic variations were significantly correlated with Vietnamese migrant females' vowel working space area. In addition, Subjects' vowel working space area and bark scale also had a significant relationship. This study showed that there were unique acoustic characteristics in some vowel parameters and sociolinguistic variations made an effect on vowel's working space areas and bark scale.(Chonbuk National University)
