This article focuses on the study of Hong Ju-se(洪柱世), which has never been introduced until now. Hong Ju-se is a writer who lived in the year of Injo. He was not a very popular writer who had been spotlighted at the center of literary history, but had a reputation for his literary talent. In this article, I introduced Hong's life and relationship between the people and the ideological features, and briefly reviewed his literary views, to provide a foundation for a deeper understanding of Hong's literature, and the 17th century literary history. Although Hong was not politically adept, he has grown up in his literature and ideas by interacting with famous writers of the day. He carried out JingXu(靜虛) by inheriting Lee Yi(李珥)'s ideas, and very interested in current affairs(時務). Literally, he valued the trade-off of models, especially the literature from the Tang Song(唐宋) period. In the writing, he emphasized the simplicity of expression(辭達) and fluently communicate(理暢).

홍주세는 仁祖-孝宗 연간을 살았던 文人으로, 문학사의 중심에서 스포트라이트를 받았던 대형 작가는 아니었지만 당대에 문학적 재능이 특출한 것으로 알려져 일정 정도 文名을 누렸다. 본고에서는 홍주세의 생애와 교유 관계 및 사상적 특징을 소개하고, 그의 문학관을 간략히 검토함으로써 홍주세의 문학 세계, 나아가 17세기 문학사를 보다 깊이 있게 이해하기 위한 토대를 제공하고자 하였다. 홍주세는 정치적으로 현달하지는 못했지만 당대의 명문가 출신 인물들과 폭넓게 교유하면서 자신의 문학과 사상을 성숙시켜 나아갔다. 학문적으로 그는 栗谷 李珥의 사상을 계승하여 개인 수양의 측면에서는 ‘靜虛’의 실천을 강조하였고, 정치 실천의 측면에서는 ‘誠’에 기반한 현실 대응을 강조하여 時務에 깊은 관심을 보였다. 문학적으로는 전범의 절충적 참조를 중요하게 생각하는 한편으로 그중에서도 唐宋古文과 唐詩에 비중을 두었으며, 창작에 있어서는 유창하게 이치가 잘 전달되는, 이른바 ‘辭達理暢의 창작 태도를 강조하였다.
