This paper examines a new part of Donghak Peasant Revolution taken place at Buan in 1894. Until now, those who studied on Donghak Peasant Revolution has used the texts such as『 The History of Donghak」 and「 The History of Kim Nak-Cheol』 recorded by Donghak Believers. These materials, however, include unintentionally biased historical Facts organized by Donghak Believers’position after end of Donghak Peasant Revolution. Written by a confucian Ki Haeng-Hyeon(1843~?),『 Hongjae Diary』 currently excavated is a useful material to supplement this limitations. He resided in Honghae village Namha-myeon Buan area. He wrote diaries for 45 years from 1866 to 1911. He wrote personal life, observation, current issues, local administration, price fluctuation and so on. Ki Haeng-Hyeon especially recorded activities of Donghak Army around Buan and neighboring area from January to December in 1894. He wrote significant occurrences of Donghak Peasant Revolution such as GoBu Peasant Revolt, BaekSan Assembly, Hwangtohyeon Battle and The Occupation of Jeonju Castle. He did not attend Donghak Peasant Revolution. He, however, recorded Donghak Peasant Revolution which he witnessed and experienced. He did not have any intention. We can approach the historical fact of Donghak Peasant Revolution of Buan, comparing Historical Facts based on records of Donghak Believers with facts of『 Hongjae Diary』. Utilizing records of Buan confucians who did not attend at Donghak Peasant Revolution, we will understand multi layered and various aspects. In addition, it will serve as a momentum to make use of and excavate personal records like『 Hongjae Diary』 as historical materials that can ascertain specifically ‘Historical Images’ of the 19th century.

이 연구의 목적은 19세기 후반 전라도 부안군 남하면[현 주산면] 홍해마을 에 거주하던 奇幸鉉(1843~?)이 기록한『 홍재일기』를 토대로, 1894년 부안의 동 학농민혁명의 실상에 대해 검토하는 데 있다.『 홍재일기』는 1866년부터 1911 년까지 45년간 쓴 일기로, 개인적 일상뿐만 아니라 견문과 時事, 중앙과 지방 의 民政, 매월의 미곡가를 비롯한 물가, 각종 賦稅 행정 등에 대해 기록되어 있다. 이 연구의 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫 번째 동학에 가담하지 않은 부안의 유생 이 목격하고 경험한 ‘동학농민혁명’에 대해 정리할 것이다. 『홍재일기』에는 1894년 3월에서 12월까지 부안 ‘東學人’의 활동 양상과 ‘東學軍’의 동향을 추적 할 수 있는 내용이 기록되어 있다. 동학인의 교조신원을 위한 집회 및 고부민 란과 백산대회, 황토현 전투, 전주성 함락 등에 대해 現時的으로 기록되어 있 다. 두 번째 부안에 都所가 설치된 기간에 기행현이 경험한 동학군의 구체적 활동과 함께 그에 대한 향촌사회의 인식과 대응에 대해서도 살펴 볼 것이다. 그동안 부안의 동학농민혁명에 대한 연구는『 東學史』,『 金洛喆 歷史』,『 金 洛鳳 履歷』 등과 같은 동학 관계자의 기록을 주로 활용하여, 동학의 관점과 입장이 지나치게 부각되었다. 기행현의 『홍재일기』는 이러한 한계를 보완할 수 있는 자료로, 동학농민혁명이 진행되는 기간의 非東學人의 눈에 비친 혁명 의 이면과 실상을 파악하는데 도움이 될 것이다. 또한 19세기의 歷史像을 확 인할 수 있는 새로운 사료를 발굴하고 활용하는 계기가 될 것으로 기대한다.
