This study aims to analyze the effect of venture founder’s prior organizational experience on the internationalization. Based on the upper echelons theory, we propose that different types of organizational experience are linked to different types of founder characteristics. Our study utilizes a sample of 2,428 venture companies in the manufacturing sector. Empirical results support that founder’s prior work experience in both a conglomerate and venture company increase the likelihood of internationalization. This suggests that implementing the internationalization strategy is partly driven by the founder’s experiential knowledge in the prior organization. Also, we show that prior venture firm experience is more critical for the initial growth stage, while the prior conglomerate experience is more valuable for the mature stage in the business cycle. Our study highlights the importance of the founder’s prior organizational experience and further suggests that the venture’s internationalization path can be different based on different types of prior organizational experience of founders.

본 연구의 목적은 벤처기업의 국제화 수준에 창업자의 창업 전 근무 기업의 유형이 미치는 영향을 확인하는데 있다. 특히 최고경영층 이론의 제시 이후 이루어진 연구들에서 다루어 진 경영자의 특성들을 창업자의 창업 이전 근무기업의 유형과 관련지어 국제화 수준과의 관계를 파악하는데 그 의의가 있다. 본 연구는 제조업 분야의 2,428개 벤처기업을 대상으 로 진행되었으며 그 결과는 다음과 같이 요약할 수 있다. 연구결과 창업 이전의 근무경험 은 대기업과 벤처기업 모두 창업 이후 벤처기업의 국제화 수준을 상승시키는 요인으로 작용함을 확인할 수 있었고 새로이 창업하는 경영자의 조직 경험이 국제화 전략 실행에 필요한 역량이 될 수 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 초기성장기 단계에서는 창업자의 벤처기 업 근무경험이 국제화 수준을 상승시키는 요인으로 확인되었으며, 성숙기 단계의 벤처기 업에서는 창업자의 대기업 근무경험이 국제화 수준과 유의미한 정(+)의 관계를 나타내었 다. 연구결과 창업자의 기업 근무경험은 벤처기업의 국제화 전략에 있어 유리하게 작용하 고, 같은 성장단계에 위치하는 벤처기업이라도 서로 다른 성격의 조직경험을 가진 창업자 에 따라 다른 의사결정을 내릴 수 있음을 시사한다.
