As life expectancy is increasing due to advanced biomedical sciences, people have increasingly paid attention to quality of life in the second half of life such as dying process, for instance, a good death. According to a number of studies on the good death, it would help older patients to die in dignity while they have sense of connectedness with their acquaintances. The sense of connectedness, which is a kind of belief about life after death, make the patients find solace and keep dignity when they die. While Chochinov was working on the good death with the dying people, he developed a model of dignity therapy to assist patients dealing with the imminent end of their lives for dying cancer patients. Attributes of the good death and how to implement in a community-based hospice setting were introduced in this article. Dignity therapy allows patients to leave a formalized legacy document which contains history, meaning and value of their life to desired loved people and family members, and also makes them be able to maintain feelings of physical comfort, interpersonal connectedness, belonging, autonomy in the face of impending death.

생명과학 및 의학의 발달로 수명이 연장되면서 생의 후반기 삶의 질은 물론 죽음에 이르기까지의 과 정, 예를 들면, 좋은 죽음(good death)에 대한 관심도 높아졌다. 여러 연구들에 의하면, 좋은 죽음이란 환자가 현재 주위사람들과 연결되어 있다고 느낀 상태에서 죽음을 편안하게 맞이하는 것이다. 이와 같은 연결의 감정은 자신이 세상을 떠난 뒤에도 이어진다는 믿음을 의미하는데, 이는 죽음을 맞이할 때 마음의 위안과 존엄성을 유지시켜준다. Chochinov는 임종을 앞둔 말기 암환자들을 상대로 좋은 죽음의 연구를 하면서 존엄성의 중요성을 인식한 존엄치료모델을 개발하였다. 본고에서는 좋은 죽음 의 특성을 비롯하여 지역사회 기반의 호스피스 상황에서 존엄치료를 실시하는 과정을 소개하였다. 존엄치료는 한 개인이 살아온 인생역정, 삶의 의미와 가치 등을 사랑하는 사람이나 가족에게 전달하 게 해주며, 이를 통해서 죽음의 순간에 임박해서도 심신의 편안함, 소속이나 연결되어 있는 느낌, 자 율성 등을 유지할 수 있도록 해주는 것이다.
