One of the most difficulty issues which Korea has gone through with the process of aging population might be to increase rapidly the numbers of people with dementia. While the number of nursing facilities for dementia patients has been increasing, the major resources for people with dementia should be their family members. However, if the family members do not understand general characteristics of dementia well, their quality of life might be getting worse and worse while they continue to care for the patient. Family and caregives support programs such as counseling, psychodrama, narrating memoirs of family care, and using of assistive technology which can be easily approached in their community were introduced in this paper. The primary function of the programs should be to make them understand what the characteristics are, but the ultimate function would be to imporve their quality of life through instructing them better skills of communication with dementia patients. Several strategies which can maximize effects of family support suggested in the last part of this paper.

우리나라가 고령화 사회로 변모하면서 겪어야 하는 가장 큰 어려움들 중 하나는 노인인구 증가에 따 라서 치매환자의 수도 폭발적으로 증가한다는 점이다. 치매환자를 돌보는 시설기관은 지속적으로 늘 어나고 있더라도 치매환자를 지원해주는 가장 큰 자원은 가족이다. 가족이 치매를 제대로 이해하지 못했을 경우에는 가족 구성원이나 환자 모두 삶의 질이 저하될 수밖에 없다. 본고에서는 치매환자의 가족을 지원해주는 프로그램들 중 지역사회에서 쉽게 이용할 수 있는 가족상담, 사회 심리극, 수기발 표회, 및 교구 활용의 효과를 소개했다. 이러한 프로그램들의 기능은 기본적으로 치매를 올바르게 이 해시키는 것이지만, 궁극적으로는 환자와 가족의 소통을 도와주면서 삶의 질을 제고시키는 것이다. 이에 본고의 후반부에서는 치매가족의 지원 효과를 극대화시키기 위한 방안들을 제언하였다.
