This article explores the ideological aspects of Metabolism architecture while illuminating its social and historical context. This paper does not discuss the formal influences or aspects of Metabolism, but rather analyzes the Metabolism architects' interest in the city during the inter-war years, and their exploration of “tradition” through ideological and architectural references. This essay examines this movement's entrance on the world stage as a kind of ‘declarative avant-garde’ after Japan's defeat in the Second World War.The next chapter, with a focus on the work of the architects, explores Metabolism 1960 as the center of each project, and examines the relationship between Metabolism and tradition. Through this analysis, this paper looks at the ideological influences on the philosophical foundations of metabolism architecture. The last chapter emphasizes the way Metabolism combined tradition, novel science and technology in order to build a national identity in Japan. Whereas Western avant-garde subverted “tradition” as a negation, Metabolism found tradition was an essence of its identity.

본 논문을 통해 메타볼리즘 건축의 형식적인 분석보다는 이 운동이 탄생한 사회 역사적 배경을 조명하면서 사상적 측면을 중심으로 살펴본다. 제2차 세계대전 중 제국주의시기에 어떻게 건축가들이 도시에 관심을 가졌는지 구체적인 사례를 통해 분석한 다음, 패전 후에 일종의 ‘선언적(宣言的)인 아방가르드’로서 어떻게 세계무대로 진출하고자 하였는지 그 차이를 비교한다. 본론에서 메타볼리즘 운동의 탄생을 전후하여 시대적 배경을 중심으로 분석한다. 그 다음으로 건축가마다의 작업과 함께 그들이 각각 어떤 주장을 가지고 프로젝트를 전개하였는지 『메타볼리즘 1960』을 중심으로 살펴본 다음, 마지막으로 메타볼리즘과 전통의 관계를 살펴본다. 이를 통해 메타볼리즘 건축이 갖는 형식적인 측면에 어떻게 사상적 영향이 미쳐 있는지 분석하며, 일본의 정체성을 구축하기 위해 전통과 과학기술을 어떻게 결합시켰는지 논한다.
