Journal of the International Network for Korean Language and Culture 16-1, 187-211. The purpose of this study is to present a model of a discussion class for advanced students using modern Korean literature. Many studies demonstrate that literature enhances both language and cultural understanding; however, actual studies in a teaching environment have been focused on and limited to reading (for vocabulary and expression) and culture (to study cultural elements), and have been centered on the teacher, whose participation is generally limited to passive and rote lectures. Literature with detailed and realistic content serves as an excellent teaching resource for speaking and writing. Therefore, selecting books dealing with timely cultural issues can be more useful in motivating learners for theme-based lessons. This study suggests that utilizing various literary works that deal with current themes can be used successfully to improve Korean language skills and sociocultural awareness. 본 연구에서는 한국어 교육에서 한국 현대문학을 활용한 주제 중심토론·토의 수업의 실효성에 대해 고찰해 보았다. 기존의 한국어 교육현장에서의 문학수업 방식이 모국어 화자를 대상으로 한 국어 교육에서의 수업 방식과 큰 차이가 없었던 것을 비판하고, 학습자들의 요구조사를 바탕으로 기존 수업에서 중요시되었던 어휘와 문법, 문학적 표현에 대한 교수를 배제하였으며, 학습자들의 흥미와 동기 부여를 위하여 현대문학으로부터 추출할 수 있는 시의적인 주제를 선택하여 그 주제를 중심으로 한 토론·토의 수업을 구성하였다. 실제 수업에서 문학의 입체적인 인물에 대입하여 토론과 토의를 하는 활동이학습자들의 사고와 표현을 확장하는 것과 동시에 말하기를 활성화하는 것을 확인함으로써 문학을 활용한 토론·토의 수업의 유의미한 효과를 증명하였다. 한국 현대문학을 활용한 토론·토의 수업 모형이 한국 현대 사회가 당면한 여러 가지 문제를 주제로 삼아 다양하게 활용될 수 있기를 기대한다.
