The purpose of this study is to a leaner's proficiency degree in understanding reading materials about Korean culture by measuring word difficulty in texts. This study focuses on reading materials among various types of cultural materials to determine the value of reading materials as a method of teaching culture. By studying Korean culture, learners may improve their ability to understand texts, if in fact it is difficult to limit the range to teach culture in Korean language education. Analyzing the word difficulty of the texts from 18 reading materials about Korean culture for foreigners, 16 books showed a vocabulary that was a higher level than advanced. It is difficult to say that reading culture books will improve proficiency. In addition, texts with very different levels of vocabulary make it difficult for learners to read on their own. If this kind of reading experience repeats, the learners may give up reading as well as learning culture.

본 연구의 목적은 다양한 수준의 한국 문화 교재 개발의 필요성을 바탕으로 본고는 읽기 문화 교재에 수록되어 있는 텍스트의 난이도를 측정해 봄으로써 실제 읽기 문화 교재가 학습자의 숙달도를 얼마나 고려해서 개발되고 있는지를 검토해 보고 문제점을 제기하는 것이다. 이를위해 기존의 다양한 한국어 교재 중 읽기 문화 교재를 살펴보고자 한이유는 한국어 문화 교육의 수단으로 읽기 교재의 가치를 높이 평가하기 때문이다. 한국어 교육에서 다루어야 할 문화의 범위는 어디까지인가를 논할 때 만약 그 범위를 한정짓는 것이 쉽지 않다면 한국어 학습자에게 방대한 문화 내용을 일일이 교수하기보다 문화 내용을 담은 텍스트의 이해 능력을 향상시켜 스스로 문화 학습을 할 수 있게 하는 것이 효율적이라고 본다. 한국어 문화 교육의 효율적 방법으로서 읽기 문화 교재를 개발해야 한다는 필요성을 배경으로 18권의 외국인 대상 읽기 문화 교재 텍스트의어휘 난이도를 분석해 본 결과 2권을 제외한 16권의 교재가 모두 고급이상의 어휘 수준을 보였다. 뿐만 아니라 하나의 교재 내에 수준 차이가 심한 텍스트들이 분포되어 있어 학습자가 혼자 읽을 경우 어려움이예상되며 이러한 현상이 반복되면 독자는 학습을 포기하게 될 수도 있을 것이다. 또한 외국인 독자의 한국어 수준을 고려하여 교재의 언어적 수준을 명시하여 교재 선택을 돕거나 어휘 보조 장치를 포함하여텍스트 이해를 돕는 등의 배려가 부족한 것으로 보인다.
