This study focuses on humor in several of Kim Seung-ok’s novels to see how the writer uses humor to reveal the special emotional state of the characters. The attitude of the characters to humor can be inferred from an analytical understanding of the dialogue and plot patterns. The highlighting of the characters’ special emotional state in the novels is understood as an indicator of breakage in their relationship and presented through a narrative conversation between the characters in awkwardly processed situations. The conversation is humorous in contrast with the situation the characters are faced with. In this paper I consider three aspects of this peculiar humor. First, the characteristics of humor as a defense mechanism for fear of intimacy found in the absence of communication between the characters in “Winter 1964 in Seoul.” Second, the characteristics of cynical and allegorical humor, and the humor of aggression shown by intellectuals in “Hwansangsuchup.” Third, in “A cup of tea” and “1960s style,” I examine Kim Seung-ok’s satire of the sixties’ vulgar consumption culture which is portrayed as a physical symptom, while also looking at the lives of the petit bourgeoisie who cannot participate. Kim Seung-ok’s humor is understood as a form of pathos, characteristically formed in the culture of the time, and functioning as a sanction that can give a glimpse of 1960s Korean society.

이 글은 김승옥의 몇몇 소설에서 나타나는 ‘유머’에 주목하여, 작가가 인물들의 특수한 감정 상태를 드러내기 위해 ‘유머’를 어떻게 활용하고 있 는가를 살펴보고자 한다. 유머에 대한 인물들의 태도는 대화 및 플롯 양 상을 분석적으로 이해함으로써 추론할 수 있을 것이므로 이를 중심으로 논의를 전개해가고자 한다. 김승옥은 소설에서 인물들의 특수한 감정 상태를 부각하여 형상화한다. 이 감정은 등장인물들의 관계에 있어서 관계의 단절을 보여주는 지표로 이해되고, 서술적으로 어색하게 가공된 상황 속에서 인물들이 나누는 대 화를 통해 제시된다. 이 대화의 상황은 인물들이 처한 현실과 대비되어 유머러스하게 설정되는데, 이것이 웃음을 유발하기도 하고 그렇지 않기도 한다. 이 글은 여기서 발견되는 독특한 성격의 유머를 세 측면에서 살펴 보고자 한다. 첫째, ｢서울 1964년 겨울｣에서는 등장인물들이 나누는 대화에서 발견되 는 의사소통의 부재에 주목하여, 인물들이 서로에게 친밀감에 대한 두려 움의 감정을 보이는데 이를 유머의 관점에서 이해해 보고자 한다. 둘째, 지식인 소설이라고 볼 수 있는 ｢환상수첩｣에서는 지식인인 등장인물들이 보여주는 냉소적이고 우월적인 유머와 공격성의 유머 등의 형상화 양상 을 살핀 뒤 그 유머의 성격을 살펴보고자 한다. 셋째, ｢차나 한잔｣과 󰡔60 년대식󰡕에서는 신체적 증상으로 나타나는 유머의 형상화 양상을 살핀 뒤, 이를 통해 60년대의 저속한 소비문화에 대한 작가의 비판의식을 유추해보 고, 그 시대와 대면하지 못하는 소시민적인 인물들의 삶을 이해해 보고자 한다. 이로써 이 글은 김승옥의 ‘유머’를 당시의 문화 속에서 특징적으로 형성된 “느낌(Pathos)의 형식”으로서의 이해하고, 이것이 1960년대 한국사회 를 조망할 수 있는 제재로서 기능하고 있음을 밝혀보고자 한다.
