The purpose of this study is to examine the coping aspect of residents of the Wido region followed by the decline of yellow corvina fishing with a special emphasis on the case of the island. Since the yellow corvina fishing of Wido, which had been maintained for a long time of period, has declined since the beginning of the 1970’s, this study is going to review the changes of the residents’ life in the process. It is no exaggeration to say that most of the preceding studies have been focusing on the splendid appearance of yellow corvina fishing. While they are evaluated as studies that summarized the past residing in somewhere of our memories, there is little studies that emphasized the actual conditions since the decline of yellow corvina fishing. The reasons for the decline of yellow corvina fishing in the 1970’s and the changes henceforth were reviewed through the preceding studies, newspapers and on-the-spot survey. It was found that the complicate effects such as the changes in the water temperature, development of scientific technology, and the reclamation project of Gehwado caused disappearance of the yellow corvina in the Wido region. The residents started anchovy fishery that had been uninterested due to the change of the fishery environment and left the island in order to find new jobs. The change was one of new phenomena. It occurred from the decline of yellow corvina fishing that seemed to last forever. In these points, the changes in the 1970’s should be considered important in various aspects.

본 연구는 위도 지역의 사례를 중심으로 조기어업의 쇠퇴에 따른 주민들의 대응 양상을 살펴보는 데 목적이 있다. 오랫동안 유지되던 위도의 조기어업은 1970년대 로 접어들면서 사양길을 걷는데, 이 과정에서 주민들의 삶이 어떻게 바뀌게 되었는 지를 살펴보려고 한다. 지금까지의 연구들 대부분은 조기어업의 화려했던 모습을 그리는 데 주안점을 두었다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 기억 저편에 자리하고 있는 과거의 모습을 정리했다 는 점에서 높게 평가되지만 조기어업의 쇠퇴 이후의 모습을 주목한 연구는 찾아보 기 어렵다. 1970년대 조기어업이 쇠퇴하게 된 연유와 이후의 변화 양상은 기존의 연구와 신 문자료, 그리고 현장조사를 통해 고찰하였다. 자료를 통해 이 무렵 수온의 변화 과학기술의 발달, 그리고 개화도 간척사업 등이 복합적인 영향으로 위도 지역에서 조 기가 사라졌음을 파악할 수 있었다. 어업환경의 변화로 주민들은 관심을 두지 않았 던 멸치어업에 뛰어들기도 했으며, 새로운 일자리를 찾아 섬을 떠나야만 했다. 이런 모습은 분명 이전 시기에는 볼 수 없었다. 영원할 것 같았던 조기어업이 소 멸되면서 생겨난 것이다. 그런 점에서 1970년대의 이런 양상은 여러 가지 면에서 중 요하게 살펴봐야 할 것이다.
