This research examines an outer space and contrasting properties of six modern gardens located in Seoul. Modern gardens are classified into two types and the features of each type are investigated respectively. The result of this study is as follows: first, urban type Hanok and modern type Hanok have different garden designs. Urban type Hanok has developed Courtyard whereas modern type Hanok has developed Backyard. Second, the function of garden in courtyard type is mainly focused on the ‘housework’ while the function of garden in backyard type is mainly for ‘appreciation’. Importantly, there are major differences in the features of the two gardens. Courtyard type Hanok shows a multi-functional feature as it is an integration of several gardens from previous history. Courtyard garden has become a space for practicality and a connecting place of various features in Hanok, like rooms or toilets or warehouses. Additionally, It has become a space for planting. On the other hand, features of outer garden and borrowed scenery are found in backyard type Hanok. Moreover, stone adornment has lost its place as an installation location and became a sheer decorative factor of garden interiors.

본 연구는 서울시에 위치한 근대 정원의 외부 공간 및 조영특성을 파악하고자 하 였다. 연구의 대상지는 고희동 가옥, 이상범 가옥, 장면 가옥, 백인제 가옥, 이태준 가옥, 최순우 가옥 등 6개소이다. 대상지 6개의 정원을 두 가지 유형으로 분류하고 유형별 세부 특성을 연구했다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 정원 형태의 경우, 도시형 한옥은 ㅁ자형 안마당이 발달한 ‘중정형 한옥’ 이 었으며 근대형 한옥은 뒷마당이 발달한 ‘후원형 한옥’이었다. 둘째, 정원 기능적 측면의 경우, 중정형 한옥은 주로 가사노동 및 작업에 치중된 반면 후원형 한옥의 경우 완상 및 감상을 위한 공간이었다. 셋째, 정원 조영 특성의 경우 각 형태별로 다음과 같은 차이를 보였다. 중정형 한 옥은 이전부터 존재하던 여러 개의 마당들이 하나로 통합되면서 복합적인 성격을 보였다. 중정형 한옥은 실용의 공간이며 주택 내부 공간을 잇는 유일한 통로이자 식 재 공간이었다. 반면 후원형 한옥은 외원 및 차경의 요소가 가미되었다. 나아가 석 조 경물은 본래 설치기법의 장소적 위계를 상실했고 정원 내부의 장식적 요소로 전 락했다.
