The relationship between Korea and Britain in the last century was, in short, "an imbalance." The relationship between the two countries in the world history since the late 1800s was in stark contrast. At that time, the United Kingdom was integrated into the modern state early on, and boasted the world's first national power by industrialization and overseas colonization. During the same period, however, Korea was late in its modernization process and suffered the emptiness of becoming a Japanese colony. Since then, Britain has actively supported Japan as an ally of Japan in the Russia- Japanese War and eventually had to acquiesce in Japan when it took away Korea 's sovereignty. Next, the deep relationship between the two countries was made by British troops during the Korean War. During the war, Britain supported the Korean government by sending troops and navy troops to the difficult circumstances of their own countries. In particular, from the winter of 1950 to 1951, Britain and the United States had vigorous diplomatic friction over the Korean issue. Britain had a lot of disagreements between the two countries until the truce, fearing that the US might drive its alliance to a standstill because of the misjudgment. Therefore, this paper focuses on the analysis on the battlefield level rather than the international political aspect and the content of today's British veterans' war veterans. At the time of the Korean War, British troops were followed by a large number of US troops. As for the troop scale, there were 14,198 people including two ground infantry brigades, one marine commando and 17 naval vessels including one aircraft carrier. As a result, 1,078 deaths, a total of 4,909 casualties including casualties and missing persons, and 885 deaths among the dead were buried in the UN Memorial Park in Busan. Especially, British soldiers are the most abundant in the cemetery of war dead in war memorial park in Busan UN Military Memorial Park. In this paper, we propose the future battle between Korea and United Kingdom based on the battle of the British Army in the 6.25 war, major combat cases, and victims of war dead and war veterans. I hope that these activities will further enhance the friendship between the two countries.

지난 한 세기의 한국과 영국의 관계는 한마디로 “불균형의 관계”였다. 1800년대 말 이후 의 세계사에서 두 나라의 관계는 극히 대조적이었다. 당시 영국은 일찍이 근대국가로의 통 합이 이루어지고 이를 기반으로 산업화와 해외식민지 개척 등으로 세계 제1의 국력을 자랑 하였다. 그러나 같은 기간 동안 한국은 근대화 과정에 늦게 참여하였고, 일본의 식민지가 되는 비운을 겪기도 하였다. 그 이후 영국은 러일전쟁에서 일본의 동맹국으로써 적극 지원을 하였고 결국 일본이 한국 의 주권을 빼앗을 당시 사실상 묵인하고야 말았다. 그 다음으로 양국의 깊은 관계는 6·25전 쟁 기간 중의 영국군 파병으로 이루어졌다. 전쟁 기간 중 영국은 자국의 어려운 사정을 무 릅쓰고 육·해군을 파병하여 한국정부를 지원하였다. 특히 1950년 겨울부터 1951년 까지 영국과 미국은 한국문제를 두고 격렬한 외교적 마찰 을 가지기도 하였다. 영국은 미국이 오판으로 인하여 동맹국들을 확전으로 몰고 갈지 모른다는 우려로 휴전이 될 때까지 양국 간에 많은 의견 충돌이 있었다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 국제정치적인 측면보다 전투사적 차원에서의 분석과 오늘 날의 영국군 참전용사에 관한 내 용을 중점적으로 다루고 있다. 한국전쟁 당시 영국군은 미국군 다음으로 많은 인원이 참전했다. 병력규모로는 지상군 2 개 보병여단, 1개 해병특공대를 포함하여 14,198명과 해군은 항공모함 1척을 포함하여 17 척의 함정이 참전했다. 그 결과 전사자 1.078명, 부상자 및 실종자를 포함하여 총 4,909명 의 인명피해를 입었고 전사자 중 885명이 부산 유엔기념공원에 안장되어 있다. 특히 부산 UN군 기념공원내의 참전국 전사자 묘역에는 영국 군인들이 가장 많이 있다. 본 논문은 영국군의 6·25전쟁 참전과정과 주요전투사례, 전사자와 참전용사들의 희생을 바탕으로 미래 한·영 관계 발전방안 등을 제시하고자 한다. 또한 이런 활동이 양국 간의 우 호를 더욱 증진하는 계기가 되기를 기대한다.
