The Human Cities Support project ran by National Research Foundation of Korea has been sharing achievements, in humanities studies based on regionality researches, with regular citizens through humanities events/lectures since 2012. The purpose of this project is to expand the base of humanities as well as to strive for branding of cultural and historical resources. The emphasis lies in discovering regional humanistic resources and making a strong connection with local government and civic groups. “Popularization” of humanities may better serve as intellectual tasks rather than the main focus of humanities. As a result, the motivation or background behind the idea of “creative cities” and “cultural cities” is the reflection of capitalistic urban development and ignorance of “human beings” and both tangible and intangible cultural resources created by themselves. Korea has recently been benchmarking the success of cultural cities in Europe and developing tourist-centered theme parks. Despite of enhancement of quality of life, such strategies have caused the attraction of new capitals and thus invaded residents in the cities. Eventually, this became a failure of the development of cultural city. Humanities have been adopting knowledge of the west unquestioningly and, regretfully, failed to accomplish its duty. Furthermore, the effort in discovering the reason behind disengagement to society established with “popular humanities.” Despite of fierce criticisms, Humanities Popularization project will allow a coherent connection to intelligence. If the community may discover its spiritual value and transform itself into active group through this project, the humanities have accomplished its mission.

이 글은 인문학 활성화를 목적으로 시행 된 인문대중화 사업 중 인문도시와 지역인문학육성사업들이 시민교육의 장으로서의 역할을 수행하기 위해 어떤 교육내용들로 구성될 필요가 있는지에 대한 질문에서 시작하였다. 현재 사회전반에 불고 있는 인문학 대중화 현상에 대한 문제를 살펴서 인문학의 실천적 방향성을 인문도시, 지역인문학육성사업과 연계하여 시민교육으로 나아갈 방향을 다음과 같이 제시하였다. 첫째, 지역 거주자의 다양한 경험이 그 지역의 문화적 자양분으로 성장할 수 있는 기반을 조성할 수 있는 교육내용이 필요하다. 둘째, 인문학 대중화 사업이 성과를 낼 수 있기 위해서는 대학이나 연구소는 인큐베이터의 역할을 하고 시민이 주체가 되도록 교육내용이 구성되어야 한다. 셋째, 여러 부서에서 진행되는 유사 인문학육성 사업도 시민 교육이 기저에 있어야만 인문학을 통한 시민교육이 성공할 수 있다. 넷째, 사업 성과분석과아울러 오류를 수정하고 환류 가능한 인문도시 네트워크를 결성할 필요가 있다. 인문학을 통한 취약계층의 사회적 탄력성을 강화하여 그들로 하여금 새로운 힘을 얻는 기반을조성하는 기틀이 될 만한 교육과정을 생애주기별 교육 순환구조를 고려하여 구성해야한다. 인문도시 네트워크는 강사인력의 제공하는 인재뱅크가 될 수도 있고, 교육내용을상호 교환하여 서로의 인문학 프로그램이 풍성해지는 효과도 누릴 수 있을 것이다. 그동안 인문학이 서구의 지식을 무비판적으로 이식하면서 인문학 본연의 사명을 다하지 못한 통렬한 반성과 더불어 사회로부터 유리된 현실에 대한 이유를 고찰하려는 노력이 ‘대중 인문학’으로 실현되었다. 현재까지 인문학이 그동안 대중강연 중심의 한 방향으로만소비하는 인문학이었다면 앞으로는 공동체를 기반으로 하는 실천하는 인문학, 나아가사유하는 인문학으로 성장하여 지역 발전의 근간이 되기를 바란다. 그렇게 된다면 선진시민 사회의 품격을 갖추게 되어 인류 보편의 지성과 조화롭게 연결되어 다양한 사람들이 서로 존중하면서 협력하여 지역사회를 구동하는 새로운 얼개가 되어 줄 것이다.
