The existing literature pertaining to the impact of exchange rate on trade balance reveals inconclusive results. The mixed empirical outcomes potentially rest on two critical arguments: aggregation bias and the exclusion of asymmetric effect in the analysis. This article examines the effect of exchange rate on Korea-Japan trade balance. The study is conducted at 2-digit level of 45 SITC commodities to resolve the aggregation bias problem, using annual data during 1970 to 2016. The nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag model (NARDL) is used in order to incorporate the asymmetric effect of exchange rate change in the study. The empirical findings confirm the existence of asymmetric effect. The long run empirical results demonstrate that the improvement of Korea trade balance due to a depreciation of KRW is found in 18 industries (16.53 per cent of total trade of Korea with Japan), whereas the aggravations in trade balance because of the appreciation of KRW are found in 16 industries (39.71 per cent of total trade). These implies that Korea trade balance is affected by an appreciation rather than a depreciation of KRW against JPY.

환율이 무역수지에 미치는 영향에 관한 현존 문헌들은 완전하게 결론에 이르지 못했다. 다양한 실증적 결과들은 집적 편향 및 분석 시 비대칭효과 제외라는 두 가지 중요한논의에 바탕을 두고 있다. 본 글은 한-일 무역수지에 미치는 환율의 영향을 조사한다. 본연구는 집적 편향 문제를 해결하기 위해 1970년부터 2017년까지의 연간 자료를 사용하여 45개 표준 국제 무역 분류(SITC) 재화 중 2자리 단계(2-digit level)를 분석했다. 비선형자기 회귀 시차 분포(NARDL) 모형은 환율변화의 비대칭효과를 포함하기 위하여 사용되었다. 이 실증적 연구 결과는 비대칭효과의 존재를 확인시켜 준다. 장기적인 경험적 결과는 18개 산업에 걸쳐 (대일 한국의 총 무역 거래 중 16.53%) 한국 원화의 평가절하로 인한 한국 무역수지 개선을 입증하나 한국 원화 평가절상으로 인한 무역수지 악화는 16개산업에서 (총 무역 거래 중 39.71%) 나타났다. 이것들은 한국 무역수지가 일본 엔화대비한국 원화의 평가절하보다는 평가절상에 영향을 받는 것을 시사한다.
