The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between JINJA and SHINTO around the TENNO. As this is a leading role in forming the identity of Japanese people, we want to clarify the influence and significance of the interaction of these three factors on Japanese society. In the background, the phenomenon of ‘Buddhism’led by the TENNO is established, and it can be seen that it became the center of Japanese faith culture and led the formation of Japanese thought and social role. It is reflected not only in the consciousness and expansion of the essence of SHINTO but also in the development of the national religion and the expansion of the TENNO-centered thought. This fact reveals that the relationship between JINJA and SHINTO, which carries the TENNO as a JINJA, is also a natural phenomenon in b oth Japanese and cultural history. It appears that the TENNO emerged under a religious climate rather than from a simple king, and independently existed as a core of Japanese thought and society. In addition, SHINTO which evolved through the cooperation of 80,000 shrines scattered all over the country was collected and gathered in the TENNO's Imperial Palace. Its position and value became more solid by honoring the assembly in the court of the Three Kingdoms of the Palace. In this paper, we tried to find out if the TENNO worshipped in the shrine affects not only the determinants of the SHINTO dignity but also the extensibility of the faith. In the end, the three elements of the TENNO, JINJA, and SHINTO that make up Japanese tradition and history are not expected to decline in the future through the unique characteristics of the JINJA of Japan, such as the divine spirit and wishful thinking. By reaffirming the power of the TENNO, the need for the TENNO and the perception of importance will be inspired in the future.

본 논문은 천황(天皇)을 중심으로 신사(神社)와 신도(神道)의 관련성을 고찰하는데 목적이 있다. 이는 일본인의 아이덴티티(identity)를 형성하는데 있어 주도적인 역할을 하고 있는 만큼 세 요소의 상호작용이 일본사회에 미치는 영향력과 의의를 밝히고자 한다. 그 배경에는 천황가(家)가 주도한 ‘신불습합’이라는 현상이 자리 잡고 있으며, 일본신앙 문화의 중심이 되어 일본 사상의 형성과 사회적인 역할을 이끌었음을 확인할 수 있다. 나아가 신도의 본질을 의식화하고 확대함은 물론 민족 종교로의 발전과 천황중심사상의 확장에까지 반영되고 있다. 이와 같은 사실은 천황을 제신(祭神)으로 모시는 신사와 신도와의 관련성 역시 일본 역사와 문화사에 있어 지극히 자연스러운 현상이라는 것을 해명하는 것이다. 천황이 단순한 왕이 아니라 종교적 풍토 아래 출현하여 독립적으로 일본인의 사상과 사회의 핵심으로 존재함이 확인된다. 또한 전국 각지에 흩어져 있는 8만여의 신사와 신불습합을 통해 완성된 신도는 천황의 황거 안에 축소·집약되어 모셔진다. 그 집합체를 궁중삼전(宮中三殿)에 모셔 공경함으로써 그 위치와 가치는 더욱 견고하게 된다. 본 논문에서는 신사에 모셔진 천황이 신도의 품격을 좌우하는 결정자로서의 역할은 물론이고 신앙의 확장성에까지 영향을 미치는 존재임을 규명하고자 노력하였다. 결국 일본 전통과 역사를 구성하는 천황･신도･신사라고 하는 세 요소는 일본 신도만의 독자적 특성인 분령(分霊)과 권청(勧請) 등을 통해 앞으로도 쇠퇴하지 않을 것으로 생각된다. 천황이 가진 권위를 재확인함으로써 천황의 필요성과 소중함에 대한 인식은 향후 더욱 부각될 것으로 사료된다.
