초록

영어

This paper is to examine the trends of domestic sailors and to analyze the characteristics of Korean seafarers through a syntactic approach to Korea maritime history. From the prehistoric times, the Korean peninsula has been exchanging trade and cultural influence through the sea and accumulating knowledge and skills about the ocean. However, marine activities have been reduced due to the Mongolian and Japanese punishment and the policy for prohibiting sea. Resulting in an overall cut in growth opportunities for the shipping and seafarer groups. After the liberation, this is an unusual situation in which there were no ships and only crew members remained. Also, the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950 ruined the whole country, and the national industrial economy was established in the shipboard work of the crew belonging to the ocean-going vessels, foreign-flag vessels. Korean seafarers contributed greatly to the foreign currency income and peaked in the late 1980s. They faced with changes such as the decline of seamen, aging, and bankruptcy of shipping companies since the 1990s. In this way, Korean seafarers are sailors of the oceans and they have the expertise and knowledge of sea voyage, but their character and social status were different according to the changes of the times. In ancient times they was a sailing engineer, but in the medieval feudal society they was forced to work in the Japan conquest of Mongolia. During Japanese colonial rule, Japanese sailors were lacking, so that Korean seafarer trained to supplement for the Japanese shipping. And the Japanese imperialism forced them to engage in World War II. Korean crews have repeatedly peaks and valleys in Korean history. It was caused by the punishment and colonization of neighboring countries, and the poor response of government and major companies.
