The purpose of this study was to investigate the experiences of child birth and parenting of unmarried single mothers who once were service users of baby box. It is important to understand what is the meaning of the experiences of giving birth to a baby, We also aimed to identify the meaning of making decision for child raising by themselves. To doing so, we conducted in-depth interviews of five unmarried single mothers who had experiences in using baby box from May to November, 2015. We employed qualitative case study methods. As a result of the analysis, 11 categories, 28 subcategories, and 48 concepts were derived. The categories are: experiences in the original family, relationship with the parents of the child, recognition of the fact of pregnancy, different responses of the parents to the fact of pregnancy, family reaction to pregnancy and childbirth, , , , , , and . Based on the results of this study, implications for the policy and practices for supporting the child birth and upbringing of unmarried mothers were discussed, and strategies for alleviating their poverty and parenting stress were suggested.

본 연구는 베이비박스를 이용한 경험이 있는 양육미혼모의 출산과 양육 경험을 탐구한 것이다. 미혼모로서 어려운 여건 속에 있음에도 불구하고 아기를 출산하고, 그 이후 베이비박스에 아기를 두고 간 경험이 어떠한 의미가 있는지, 또한 자녀 양육을 선택한 것의 의미가 무엇인지를 밝히고자 하였다. 이를 위해 베이비박스를 이용한 경험이 있는 양육미혼모 5명을 대상으로 2015년 5월에서부터 11월까지 심층면접을 실시하여 자료를 수집하였으며, 이 자료에 대해 질적 사례연구방법에 근거하여 사례 내 분석과 사례 간 분석을 실시하였다. 분석결과, 범주 11개, 하위범주 28개, 개념 48개가 도출되었다. 범주는 <원 가족에서의 경험>, <아동의 부모와의 관계>, <임신사실의 인지>, <임신사실에 대한 아동부모의 상이한 대응>, <임신 및 출산에 대한 가족의 거센 반응>, <아동양육과 관련된 결정과정에서의 갈등>, <아동에 대한 부모의 인식변화>, <제도의 불합리성>, <베이비박스의 이용>, <아동양육을 위한 외부로부터의 지원>, <미래를 위한 자신의 노력>으로 나타났다. 이 연구결과를 기초로 하여 양육미혼모의 출산 및 양육을 지원하기 위한 정책적ㆍ실천적 방안에 대해 논의하였으며, 이들의 생활상의 빈곤, 양육스트레스 등을 완화하기 위한 대책을 제시하였다.
