In the modern era of free love and free marriage, the love story between men and women became the main theme of women’s novel. However, the female protagonists who fall in love often ended their lives by choosing 'death'. Eros and Thanatos, in Greek mythology, were used by Sigmund Freud in psychology. He saw the desire of love and the impulse of death as human instincts. Georges Bataille also said that the life of the dead is called Eroticism. But why do we see love and death in the same context? To achieve complete love by dying, it is probably because Eros and Thanatos are inseparable areas. The modern woman in novel of Kim Il-yeop displayed their identity and showed reluctance in the oppression of the patriarchal system. However, the social convention or parental pressure was very strong for women to carve out their own lives and live independently. With the greatest resistance to patriarchal customs, women chose death. The road to escape from the painful misery of love was also death. To complete love by death is what Eros transforms into Thanatos. In conclusion, in Kim Il-yeop’s novel based on death the 'death' of female characters was a part of the author's philosophical and religious thinking as an exploration of 'human nature'.

자유연애, 자유결혼이 유행하던 근대 시기는 여성소설도 남녀의 연애 이야기가 주를 이루었다. 그런데 사랑에 빠져들었던 여성 주인공들은 ‘죽음’을 선택함으로써 생을 마치는 경우가 많았다. 사랑의 에로스(Eros)와 죽음의 타나토스(Thanatos)는 그리스 신화에 나오는 신의 이름으로, 프로이트(Sigmund Freud)는 이 개념을 심리학에서 사용하였다. 그는 사랑의 욕망과 죽음의 충동을 인간의 본능으로 보았다. 바타유(Georges Bataille)도 죽음까지 인정하는 삶이 에로티시즘이라고 하였다. 그렇다면 왜 사랑과 죽음을 같은 맥락에서 보게 되는 것일까. 죽음으로써 완전한 사랑을 이루고자 하는 것은 결코 에로스와 타나토스가 분리될 수 없는 영역이기 때문일 것이다. 김일엽 소설 속의 신여성들은 가부장제의 억압 속에서도 자기의 정체성을 자각하고 세상에 저항하는 면모를 보여주었다. 그러나 이 여성들이 스스로의 삶을 개척하며 독립적으로 살아가기에는 사회적 인습이나 부모의 강요가 매우 거세었다. 가부장제의 악습에 대한 최대의 저항으로 여성들은 죽음을 선택하였다. 이루어질 수 없는 사랑의 고통에서 벗어나는 길 또한 죽음이었다. 죽음으로써 사랑을 완성한다고 여기는 것은 에로스가 타나토스로 굴절되는 양상이라 할 수 있다. 에로스와 타나토스의 관점으로 김일엽 소설을 고찰한 결과, 여성 인물들의 ‘죽음’은 ‘인간의 본질’에 대한 탐구였으며, 이는 작가의 철학적, 종교적 사고가 드러나는 부분이었다.
