The novel [Dersu Uzala] focuses on the story of author’ travel helper Dersu Uzala, who belonged to aborigine Goldi(or Nanai) of Far East. The plot of this novel is based on one year’ trip of Arceniev and Dersu to northern mountainous region of Primoire. In spite of discrimination to aborigines from Chinese, Korean and Old belivers of Russian Orthodox church, Arseniev respects Dersu’s life who matched and harmonized with mother nature, but ironically Arceniev’s expedition served for russia’ exploitation of this region. Furthermore, Dersu was killed in urban area near Khabarovsk, following Arseniev’ suggestion to residence in urban area with him. Arseniev felt he’s responsible on Dersu’ death. The noble ‘Dersu Uzala’ is a kind of his confession to aborigines, who rapidly disappeared by civilized people. Unlike other Western nations that colonized other continents through the ocean, Russia’s colonization was a kind of gradual expansion of her territory to Siberia and the Far East. So, russian’s conception and interest on Far Eastern Asia was reflected on Arseniev’s noble.

소설 『Dersu Uzala』는 연해주에서 만난 원주민 데르수와 러시아인 아르세니예프가 만나서 같이 연해주를 탐험했던 이야기를 주요한 테마로 한다. 아르세니예프는 자연과 함께 살던 데르수의 삶을 존중했지만 결국 러시아인의 궁극적인 목적은 이 지역의 개발이었다. 그의 조사이후 연해주는 철도가 놓이고 급격히 개발되어갔다. 그 와중에 얼마나 많은 또 다른 ‘데르수’가 사라져갔는지는 짐작조차 할 수 없다. 해양을 매개로 다른 대륙을 식민지로 만들었던 다른 서양의 열강과 달리 러시아는 자국의 영토를 확장해가는 과정에서 거점위주로 시베리아와 극동을 개발했다. 이러한 다른 맥락에서 이루어진 러시아의 유라시아에 대한 관심과 지배의 맥락에서 한국과 주변을 인지했다. 『데르수 우잘라』는 러시아가 극동으로 진출했을 때에 원주민에 대한 회한과 애정이 담긴 탐험가의 기록이라는 점에서 단순한 문학작품 이상의 의미를 지닌다.
