This paper aims to analyze the core of journalism in John Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley. Travels with Charley is a travelogue, which depicts a 1960 road trip around the United States in the company of his standard poodle, Charley. Steinbeck was moved by a desire to see his country on a personal level. For this study, the dialectic between the method of reportage and the impulses of the report worked together to study Freud’s epistemophilic notion so that the narrator of Travels with Charley can define the parameters of the national identity with his cognitive interest. In addition, if the reporting process is combined with pleasure, America, the subject of the report, operates as a tool for measuring pleasure. “America” itself serves as a synecdoche invoked to measure the pleasure of the narrator’s fantastic work. Therefore, this study is about a macrocosm of microcosm me and the original telos of Travels with Charley is to invoke Americanness through a series of episodes that are supposed to characterize the nation as a whole.
