This study is a in-depth case study exploring the experiences of the survivors who practiced the New Start Health Principle after being diagnosed with cancer. Subjects consist of four survivors who had been diagnosed with cancer and confirmed to have fully recovered after five years through maximum variation. This study deduced five common themes from the participants’ experiences of recovery and long-suffering fights against the disease by applying Creswell’s(2007) method of whitin-case and in-between cases analyses. The themes are: 1) bodies becoming sick in harsh conditions of life, 2) shocking news of cancer as the reward for a hardworking life, 3) new life given at the moment of resignation, 4) New Start, not as a straw but as a rope, 5) New Start as the center of my life. Through this study, we presented the necessity of practice for health promotion and healing from a more holistic perspective, and the Newstart program based on practical application of spiritual enhancement presented the value of the health-welfare care practice site as an example that can be applied to social workers and care workers who take care of cancer patients or the elderly.

본 연구는 암을 진단받고 투병하는 과정에서 뉴스타트 건강원리를 실천하여 회복한 생존자들의 경험을 심층 적으로 탐색한 사례연구이다. 연구 참여자들은 암을 진단받고 5년 이상 경과하여 완치판정을 받은 4명의 생존자 들로 구성되었다. 질적 사례연구를 위해 Creswell(2007)의 사례 내 분석과 사례 간 분석을 통해, 참여자들의 모진 투병 및 회복의 경험으로부터 총 5개의 공통주제를 도출하였다. ‘모진 삶 속에 병들어 가는 몸’, ‘열심히 살아온 대가는 암이라는 청천벽력의 메아리’, ‘마음을 내려놓으니 새로운 생명이 주어짐, ’뉴스타트는 지푸라기가 아닌 동아밧줄’, ‘내 삶의 중심이 된 뉴스타트’로 나타났다. 본 연구결과를 통해 보다 전인적인 관점에서의 건강증진 과 치유를 위한 실천방법의 필요성을 제시하였고, 영성강화의 실천적 적용을 기반으로 하는 뉴스타트 프로그램 이 암환자나 노약자를 돌보는 사회복지사 및 돌봄 실무자들로 하여금 보건복지실천현장에서 적용될 수 있는 사 례로서의 가치를 제시하였다.
