This study aims to identify the research domain of public diplomacy along with its city diplomacy paradigm of the Seoul Metropolitan Government in Korea. In this study, keywords 'internationalization', 'globalization', 'public diplomacy', and 'city diplomacy' were selected in economics, trade, public administration, and business administration research area by Google Scholar. A total of 807 papers from 1988 to 2017 were analyzed by KrKwic program, and Ucinet 6.660 was used to visualize the results. Research trends were divided into five major periods. Results showed that the keywords such as 'globalization', 'internationalization', 'research', 'Korea' have the high betweenness centrality through the periods. From 1998 to 2001, the research trends were mainly focused on the direction and strategy of domestic and foreign city diplomacy Policy. From 2002 to 2005, the research trends were mainly focused on knowledge-based and identity-based city diplomacy. From 2006 to 2010, the research trends showed that soft power was the critical factor of city diplomacy. From 2011 to 2015, the research trends were mainly focused on the non-governmental(people-to-people) diplomacy. From 2016 to 2017, the research trends showed that the image and the brand of the city were crucial for city diplomacy. Thus, the city diplomacy research has gradually expanded its areas and topics; research on the foundation of city diplomacy, the identity of city diplomacy, city diplomacy as soft power, research method. Nevertheless, the study suggested that it is necessary to expand the new research subject based on the preexisting research subjects in terms of pursuing diversity and depth of city diplomatic order research topics. This study explored the past and present of the city diplomacy research trends and discussed the potential direction of future research topics.

본 연구는 서울시 도시외교 질서 (패러다임)변화를 기준으로 각 시기별 도시외교 관련 연구의 흐름과 특성을 통하여 파악하고자 하였다. 1998년부터 2017년까지 도 시외교 질서와 관련한 논문 총 807편을 수집하였고, 논문의 제목을 이용하여 언어 네트워크 분석을 실시하였다. 도시외교 질서 변화를 시기별로 연구경향을 분석하고 각 시기별 질서와 연구주제의 연관성, 특징 등을 파악하였다. KrKwic을 사용하여 언 어네트워크 분석을 실시하였고, 그 결과를 시각화하기 위해서 Ucinet과 Netdraw를 사용하였다. 연구결과, 서울시 도시외교 변화에 따른 4가지 발전 단계 기간과 그 이 후 기간을 포함한 총 5 단계의 기간 동안의 연구 경향 및 특징에 공통점과 차이점 이 나타났으며, 도시외교 연구가 도시외교 질서 변화와 함께 그 연구영역이 확장되 고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구는 도시외교의 연구 흐름을 파악하고 새로운 학문적 관점과 방법론을 적용하고자 하는 연구자들에게 향후 연구 주제와 방향성을 제시할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
