This research reconsiders whether postcolonialism is still valid discourse in contemporary art, and intends to critically examine recent international exhibitions and the works of artists. To do this, we must look at how the issues of minority and the Other are represented in the current power relationship structure. And observe how these issues are represented in contemporary art. Postcolonialism is a series of processes that take place after colonialism. It is not intended to restore the deprived land, regain its sovereignty, and promote national identity. It is a progressive resistance and development that attempts to critically approach why this situation has happened, making binary oppositions such as the mainstream/ subcultural, oriental/ western, superior/ inferior. There are many difficulties in discussing the contemporaneity and sustainability of postcolonial discourse in situations where three quarters of the world have experienced colonialism with some still experiencing it. However, the ambiguous, unclear, and hybrid part of postcolonialism is an important driver of art creation. The arts as a discourse of resistance has represented the problems we are currently experiencing with conflicts, war and refugees, and the issues in boundary life by forced migration and diaspora.

본 논문은 동시대 미술 속에서 후기식민주의가 여전히 유효한 담론인가를 재고해 보고 이를 올바로 이해하기 위해 최근 전시와 예술가들의 작품을 비평적으로 고찰해보고자 한다. 후기식민주의 담론은 식민주의 이후, 이를 극복하고 벗어나기 위한 투쟁이자 이에 대한 반성과 성찰이 모두 포함된일련의 과정을 말한다. 이는 빼앗긴 땅을 되찾고, 주권을 회복하고, 민족적 정체성을 내세우기 위한것은 아니다. 왜 이러한 상황이 벌어지고, 주류/비주류, 동양/서양, 우월/열등과 같은 이분법적 구조가생기에 되었는지에 대해 비판적으로 접근해 보고, 이를 해체하고 분석하고자 하는 진보적인 저항이자 또 다른 단계로의 발전을 추구하고자 하는 담론이다. 전 세계의 4분의 3의 지역이 식민을 경험했고, 여전히 모든 식민주의가 온전히 끝난 것이 아닌 상황에서 후기식민주의 담론의 동시대성과 지속가능성을 논하기에는 어려움이 있지만, 후기식민주의 담론 안에서 나오는 모호하고 불분명하고 혼종적인 부분은 역설적이게도 예술창작의 중요한 동인으로 작용하고 있다. 저항 담론으로서의 예술에는현재 우리가 겪고 있는 전쟁과 갈등 그리고 난민문제가 있었고, 강요된 이주와 이산에 의해 경계적삶에서 오는 난관이 있었다. 최근 국제무대를 중심으로 활동하는 예술가들의 작업에는 이러한 시의적인 문제가 잘 반영되어 있고, 그 안에는 고유함보다는 혼성의 미학이 나타난다. 따라서 본 논문이동시대 미술 속에서 후기식민주의와 저항 담론을 이해하기에 가치 있는 비평을 제공하기 바란다.
