The aim of this essay is to diagnose the ecological problems of the collective alpinism which emerged as an influential paradigm of contemporary mountain tourism, and then to highlight the alternative significance of ‘ecotourism’ as a sustainable and responsible tourism mode contrasted to it. The Western classic alpinism has preserved the idea of heroic climbing which stamps the footprints of domination and conquest on the mountain reduced to a certain quantity of height and magnitude. Furthermore, this anthropocentric representation of mountain has gradually furthered a crowding and rushing style of mountaineering by joining Korean vulgar alpinism which was transformed into a popular mountaineering culture through the process of collectivization and equalization. And hereby, the ecological stability of famous mountains has been severely damaged, and human self has gradually become insensible to the various wonders of nature. But as we know, this practices of alpinism cannot secure the sustained existence of human and nature any longer. So, in this essay I asserted that in the present day when the new relationship between human and mountain must be established, ecotourism needs to be socially promoted as a new paradigm of mountain tourism which sublates the above-mentioned crowding and rushing style of mountaineering. Such a new tourism mode will lead tourists’s steps to the mutual sympathy with nature which respects the ecological stability of mountains and stimulates human ecological sensitivity, and hereby prove its values and meanings as a significant paradigm of sustainable culture of life by little and little.

이 글은 현대적 산지여행의 유력한 패러다임으로 급부상한 집단적 알피니즘의 생태적 문제점을 진단하는 한편, 그것과 대비되는 지속가능성 지향의 책임여행으로서 ‘생태여행’이 지니는 대안적 의의를 문화철학적 시각에서 환기하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 근대 서구의 고전적 알피니즘은 일정 수치의 높이와 크기로 환원된 산악에 지배와 정복의 족적을 새기는 영웅적 클라이머의 표상을 지금껏 온존해 왔다. 나아가 이러한 인간중심주의적 산악 표상은 집단화와 평준화의 과정을 거치며 대중적 산행문화로 변형된 한국의 속류 알피니즘과 결합되어 맹목적 속도전 양상의 과밀 등정을 점점 더 부추겨 왔고, 이로써 유명 산지의 생태적 안정성이 심각히 훼손되고 인간의 자아가 자연의 경이에 갈수록 무감해지는 부정적 결과를 초래해 왔다. 그러나 이러한 알피니즘의 관행들은 더 이상 인간과 자연의 지속적 생존을 담보할 수 없다는 문제의식 또한 점점 자라나고 있다. 이에 필자는 ‘인간과 산악의 새로운 관계 설정’이 무겁게 요청되는 오늘날 맹목적 속도전 양상의 등정산행을 지양한 신개념 산지여행으로서 생태여행이 사회적으로 활성화될 필요가 있다는 주장을 이 글에서 제기했다. 그러한 여행은 산악의 생태적 안정성을 보호하는 동시에 인간의 생태적 감수성을 증진하는 동화와 교감의 여정으로 여행자의 발걸음을 인도해 갈 것이며, 이를 통해 지속가능한 생활문화의 중요한 범례로서 자체의 가치와 의의를 서서히 증명하게 될 것이다.
