Latinamericanism after 9/11, published in 2011 during Beverley’s intellectual journey, makes a significant change. These changes are closely related to the political changes in Latin America, so called the rise of Pink Tide. With the advent of Pink Tide, the traditional view of the state, subaltern politics and culture that had been viewed by the subaltern studies has lost its grip on reality and now needs a new form of intellectual justification. He actively interpreted the social forces driving changes in Latin America and tried to reconstruct the existing intellectual attitude to theorize about this new political performance. Beverley argues that, in the reality that the subaltern’s social movements participating in the government, a progressive overcome of the subaltern studies should begin with overcoming the mechanical separation of the state and the subaltern. He also points out that the role of the state should be newly justified. His claim that a theoretical frame for a new rethinking of the relationship between the state and the subaltern and the restructuring of the state is needed led to the postsubalternism. In this article, I examined Beverley’s intellectual trajectory to postsubalternism, and then presented the background and the main issues of postsubalternism briefly.

비벌리의 지적 여정에서 2011년 출판된 『9·11 이후의 라틴아메리카니즘』(Latinamericanism after 9/11)은 상당한 변화를 의미한다. 이러한 변화는 이른바 핑크 타이드(Pink tide)의 등장이라 는 라틴아메리카의 정치적 변화와 밀접한 관련을 가지고 있다. 핑크 타이드의 등장으로 하위주 체 연구가 가지고 있던 국가, 하위주체 정치 그리고 문화를 바라보는 기존의 시각은 현실 정합성 을 잃었고, 이제 새로운 형식의 지적 사유가 필요하다는 것이다. 그는 라틴아메리카에서 변화를 이끌고 있는 사회적 힘들을 적극적으로 해석하고, 이런 새로운 정치적 수행성을 이론화하기 위 해 기존의 지적 태도를 재구성하고자 했다. 비벌리는 하위주체 계층의 사회운동이 정권에 참여하는 현실 속에서 하위주체 연구의 발전적인 극복은 국가와 하위주체의 기계적 분리를 극복하는 것에서 시작해야 한다고 주장한다. 또한 국 가의 역할을 새롭게 사유해야 한다고 지적한다. 이렇게 국가와 하위주체의 관계, 국가의 재구성 을 새롭게 사유할 이론적 틀이 필요하다는 그의 주장이 바로 포스트서발턴주의(postsubaltenism) 로 나타나게 된 것이다. 이 글에서는 포스트서발턴주의에 이르기까지 비벌리의 지적 궤정을 살펴보고, 포스트서발턴주의 가 나타나게 된 배경, 그리고 포스트서발턴주의의 주요 내용을 간략하게 살펴보고자 한다.
