In the teachings of Confucius, ‘learning’ has a significant meaning. As appears by his saying, he himself had aspired learning at the age of 15. ‘Learning’ is not just a means or a demonstration for achieving the purpose, but a self-purpose act that has sufficient meaning in itself. What ‘Learning’ is to Confucius is the only and certain way to grow, change, and complete oneself. Therefore, ‘Love of Learning’ implies an important meaning. ‘Love of Learning’ does not mean today that it just likes to study. To Confucius, ‘Love of Learning’ implies a change in human abyss and the possibility of a certain achievement in human mind. In this sense, Confucius also uses the word ‘Love of learning’ not only to humble himself, but also to praise his disciples. He did not evaluate his students on a uniform basis, but valued and emphasized ‘Love of Learning’ as the possibility of achievement. He also called himself a person who loved to learn, although he had already reached the self-completion. To Confucius, ‘Love of Learning’ implies the possibility of completing oneself and others. ‘Love of learning’ may still have significant implications today in that it eliminates a uniform and result-oriented assessment of the learner, and enhances individual learning and achievement based on personal qualities and talents.

공자사상에서 ‘학(學)’은 매우 중요한 의미를 가진다. “15세에 ‘학(學)’에 뜻을 두었다.” 라고 한 공자의 자술(自述)에서 알 수 있듯, ‘학’은 단순히 목적의 성취를 위한 수단이나 방법, 도구가 아니라, 그 자체로 독립적인 의미를 갖는 자기목적적인 행위이다. 공자에게 서 ‘학’은 자기 자신의 변화와 성장, 인간으로서의 완성을 위한 유일하고 확실한 방법이었 다. 그렇기 때문에 마찬가지로 공자에게서 ‘호학(好學)’ 또한 중요한 의미를 함의하게 된 다. 호학은 오늘날의 단지 공부하는 것을 좋아한다는 의미만을 가지는 것이 아니다. 공자 에게 호학은 인간 심연의 변화와 성인에의 성취 가능성을 내포한다. 이러한 의미로 공자 는 ‘호학’이라는 말을 자기 자신을 특징적으로 표현하는 ‘겸사(謙辭)’인 동시에, 제자를 칭 찬하는 ‘찬사(讚辭)’로 사용했다. 공자는 제자를 일률적 잣대로 성취의 정도를 평가하지 않고, 성취의 가능성으로서 ‘호학’을 중시했다. 또한 본인 스스로 원숙한 단계의 성취를 이루었음에도 불구하고 여전히 스스로를 ‘배움을 좋아하는 사람’으로 칭했다. 공자에게서 ‘호학’은 자기 자신을 완성하고 또 타인을 성취시켜주는 가능성을 내포하고 있다. ‘호학’은 배우는 자에 대한 일률적이고 결과론적인 평가를 지양하고, 개인의 자질과 재능에 따른 자율적 학습과 성취를 고양시킨다는 점에서 오늘날에도 중요한 의의를 가질 수 있다.
