Hoedang(晦堂) Yun Eungseon(尹膺善: 1854∼1924) is a pivotal figure of Uidang School(毅堂學派) organized around Jecheon, Chungcheongbuk-do Province from the late 19th to early 20th century. Uidang School was formed by literary people and younger scholars of Uidang Park Sehwa(朴世和: 1834∼1910) who chose the path of dying for the ideal, striking a note of ‘Joseon with propriety and righteousness alive(禮義朝鮮)’ when the state was about to perish in 1910. Respecting the teacher’s dying will, Yun Eungseon laid foundation of Uidang School and devoted his life to inheriting the teacher’s studies and spirit. His such conduct was often likened to ‘Confucius’ disciple Yanyuan(顏淵).’ Yun Eungseon was rather a doer and an educator than a philosopher-typed scholar. His studies and education were for a single purpose of making Joseon a state with truth being alive. His studies and thoughts are hard to be evaluated as highly original but unusual in terms of purity and practicability. Studies on Yun Eungseon have not been actively conducted yet. As this paper is at an early stage, it takes a general view of studies and spirit of Yun Eungseon, centering around collection of his works.

회당(晦堂) 윤응선(尹膺善: 1854∼1924)은 의당학파(毅堂學派)의 중추적 인물이다. 의당학파는 1910년 조선이 망해갈 때 ‘예의조선(禮義朝鮮)’을 부르짖으며 순도(殉道)의 길을 택한 의당 박세화(朴世和: 1834∼1910)의 문인⋅후학들이 구성원으로 결집된 학파다. 19세기 말부터 20세기 초에 걸쳐 충청북도 제천 지역을 중심으로 결집되었다. 윤응선은스승 박세화의 유지를 받들어 의당학파의 토대를 닦았고, 스승의 학문과 정신을 계승하는 일에 생애를 바쳤다. 이런 그를 ‘공자 문하의 안연(顏淵)’에 비유하는 사람들이 많았다. 윤응선은 철학자 스타일의 학자는 아니었고 실천가요 교육자였다. 그의 연구와 교육은한결같이 조선을 진리가 살아 있는 나라로 만드는 데 목적이 있었다. 그의 학문과 사상은독창성의 측면에서 높은 수준이라 하기는 어렵지만, 순수성과 실천성의 측면에서는 남다른 측면이 있었다. 윤응선에 대한 연구는 아직 활발하지 않다. 본고는 초기 단계의 연구이다. 문집을 중심으로, 윤응선의 학문과 정신을 개관(槪觀)하는 형식을 취하였다.
