Bukbeollon (Assertion of conquest of the northern region) is crucial to epic literature in the second half of Joseon period. This assertion was claimed in order to recover a disgraced Joseon from Qing's Jeongmyo and Byeongja invasions and to restore national pride. Thereafter, Bukbeollon continued to be discussed throughout the second half of Joseon, greatly impacting various sectors such as politics, diplomacy, national defense and society. These chronological changes were expressed by literature as they were. Taewonji enabled us to take a look at a shift in recognition by which a newly explored space, rather than being bound by the Chinese space occupied by barbarians, could become a true China. Also, how the story was developed based on the drifting mechanism rather than on dream was examined. Also, Taewonji is structurally very close-knit, and has many portions which can be interpreted ambiguously, and this was examined.

조선후기 당시 대외 정책과 관련하여 가장 활발하게 논의되었던 주제 중의 하나는 북벌론이었다. 명·청 교체기에 조선이 어떤 입장을 견지해야 하는지는 매우 민감한 문제였다. 병자호란 직후 효종대 활발하게 일어나던 북벌론은 시간이 흐를수록 변모해갔다. 영·정조대에 대명의리론과 더불어 북학이 제기되면서 북벌론은 사실상 지난 시대의 산물이 되었다. 문학에서는 이러한 사상사적 변화를 포착하여 작품 속에 형상화했으며, <太原誌>에는 북벌론의 변모와 조선중화주의라는 변형된 가치관이 더불어 나타난다. <太原誌>에는 공간 이동에 따른 의식 변화가 나온다. 주인공은 조선을 떠나 태원에 도착하는 과정에서 인식 변화를 겪는다. 지금 자신이 서있는 곳이 중심이 될 수 있다는 생각을 하게 되었다. <太原誌>는 표류와 요괴라는 허구적 장치가 있지만, 끊임없이 현실성을 부각한다. 이 작품이 단순히 흥미와 감동을 전하려는 목적 외에 현실적인 메시지를 전달하려는 의도이다. 그것은 바로 조선중화주의에 대한 생각으로, 멸망한 명나라의 회복이 아니라 문명이 실현되는 ‘이곳’이 중화의 중심이 될 수 있다는 가치관이었다.
