The purpose of this research is to analyze the determinants of entrepreneurship of startups operated by Korean women who reside in the State of California, United States. Korean women founders possess independent and strong entrepreneurial mind-sets, and begin their startups based on the relevant experience along with their high academic backgrounds. Networking via other people is playing an important role for their business. While most of the companies are small-scale and self employed, they are gradually expanding. In addition, the business areas that the Korean women focus are expanding in financial, medical, and knowledge services, and the recent good image of Korean wave is having a positive impact on their businesses. They have financed their businesses without the help of their spouses, contrary to previous research findings that have reported dependencies in terms of finance and experience from their spouses. Legal status is not an essential factor for the Korean women founders, and their language skills are sufficient enough to communicate. The results of this paper show that Korean women's entrepreneurship has been expanding into various fields of professional expertise, but gender factor such as child-care still exists as a major problem. We discuss the implications along with the limitations and future research directions.

본 연구는 미국 캘리포니아주에 거주하고 있는 한인여성들의 창업사례를 살펴보고 창업결정 요인을 분석하였다. 한인여성창업자들은 독립적이고 강인한 기업가정신을 가지고 있었고, 고학 력이면서 관련 경험을 토대로 창업하고 있었다. 이들에게는 인적 네트워크가 매우 중요한 역할 을 하고 있었다. 살펴본 사례는 셀프 고용 등 소규모의 업체들이 대부분이었지만 점차 그 규모 가 확대되고 있었다. 또한 과거 여성관련 서비스산업에 편중되었던 사업 분야가 금융, 의료, 지 식서비스 등으로 확대되고 있고, 한국에 대한 좋은 이미지는 이들 사업에 긍정적인 영향을 미치 고 있었다. 이들은 배우자의 도움 없이 내부적으로 자금을 조달하고 있었는데, 이는 자금조달이 나 관련 경험 등 배우자에 의존적이라는 기존의 연구결과와는 상반된 결과이다. 사례자 모두 법 적 신분을 유지하고 있었지만 창업에 필수적인 요소는 아니었으며, 언어구사능력은 대체로 의사 소통이 가능한 수준 이상이었다. 이처럼 살펴본 미국 캘리포니아주의 한인여성창업은 기업가정 신을 바탕으로 다양한 분야에서 전문적으로 일어나고 있었으며, 육아문제 등 젠더(gender)관련 요인은 여전히 갈등문제로 존재하고 있었다. 마지막으로 본 연구의 시사점을 제시하였다.
