The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of voluntary activity, which is a practical method of holistic education, on the ability of adolescents to empathize with others. For this purpose, paired t-test was conducted for 200 junior high school volunteers who volunteered at the volunteer forum in S city. Interpersonal Reactive Indices (IRI) were used as the measurement tools. The results of the pre- post test were found to be very different in most of the factors. As a result, after the volunteer activities, the ability of the adolescents to empathize with others was promoted and the effectiveness of the volunteer activities proved to be effective. However, emotional dimension pre-post test verification of personal painful factors was not statistically significant for most items except for some items. Future volunteer activity education programs should include whole-person education, life education, and global civic education. In addition, volunteer activities should be conducted on an extension of the lesson as an holistic service learning approach.

이 논문은 홀리스틱교육의 실천적 방법인 자원봉사활동이 청소년들의 타인에 대한 공감능력에 미치는 효과를 알아보기 위한 연구이다. 이를 위해 S시에 소재한 자원봉사포럼에 자원봉사활동을 신청한 중학생 200명을 대상으로 자원봉사 활동 프로그램 참여전과 참여후의 공감능력 변화를 알아 보기 위해 데응표본 t 검정을 실시하였다. 측정도구로는 대인관계 반응성지수(Interpersonal Reactive Indices:IRI)를 사용하였으며, 분석 결과 사전사후 검정결과는 대부분 요인 전체에 걸쳐 매우 차이가 있는 것으로 조사되어 자원봉사활동 후 청소년의 타인에 대한 공감능력이 증진되어 자원봉사활동의 효과성이 입증되었다고 할 수 있다. 그러나 정서적 차원 개인적 고통 요인에 대한 사전 사후 검증 은 일부 문항을 제외하곤 대부분 문항에 대하여 통계적으로 유의미한 차이가 없는 것으로 조사되어 향후 봉사활동 사전교육에 전인교육, 생명교육, 지구시민교육 등을 포함하여야 한다. 또한 봉사활동 은 홀리스틱봉사학습적 차원의 접근 방식으로 수업의 연장선상에서 진행되어야 한다.
