The purpose of this study is to explore the experience of sharing Korean culture with and transmitting it to their children by Korean mothers living in U. S. Severn mothers participated in this study to share their stories in-depth interviews. The results demonstrated in two categories. In the part of sharing Korean culture, the participants have used Korean family network and emphasized on using Korean language at home. Sharing Korean dishes and media programs in their family let their children know more about Korean culture and make a connection with friends from other cultures. Having a trip to Korea was for their children to discover their Korean identity and touch to actual Korean culture. To transmit Korean culture, the participants emphasized on teaching Korean language and cultural attitude. Then, they sent their children to Korean language school. By doing these, they expected that their children keep Korean cultural identity and become a bilingual user, and contribute to Korean community and both countries (U.S.- Korea) in the future. Based on the results, this study suggests that Korean government provides more active educational policies for children and families with multicultural backgrounds in oder for them to keep their dural cultural identities so that they can contribute to both Korea and their native countries and adjust well in the Korean society.

본 연구는 다양한 국적과 민족의 이주민 문화와 언어가 공존하는 미국의 다문화사회 에서 7인의 재미동포 한국인 어머니를 대상으로 자녀와 한국문화 소통과 전승에 관한 일상의 경험은 무엇이며 어떠한지 살펴보고 그 의미와 본질을 밝히고자 함에 목적을 두 었다. 주요결과로 한국문화 소통의 범주에서 참여자들은 가족 간 한국어 사용과 네트워 크를 통해 한국문화 접촉기회를 증진하였다. 한식과 한류문화 접촉은 가족 간 그리고 타 문화 사람들과 교류를 넓히며 한국문화에 대한 자부심을 표출하는 계기가 되었다. 또한, 자녀에게 직접 모국방문 기회를 제공하며 정체성의 뿌리를 발견하도록 지원하였다. 한 국문화 전승의 범주에서 자녀 한국어와 예절 교육을 문화정체성 함양의 필수요소로 인 식하며 자녀가 이중언어 활용을 통해 미래 양국(미국-한국) 간 가교역할, 진로, 한인 공 동체 기여 등의 효과를 기대하였다. 참여자들은 미국 내 소수 이주민으로서 이중언어와 문화정체성 교육의 중요성을 제시하였다. 이에, 한국 내 다문화가정 자녀의 이중언어와 문화정체성 형성을 적극적으로 지원할 정책과 교육계 변화를 제안하였다.
