This paper examines “tragic joy” in W. B. Yeats’s and Kim Jong-gil’s poems. Both poets in their poetry try to achieve ‘tragic joy’ despite the ordeals they have faced. Though they lived and worked in different places and times, it seems to me, they share the idea of “tragic ecstasy” in their poems to fulfill the “Unity of Being” or “self-realization.” I explore some affinities between the two poets who express the concept of “tragic joy” in their poems.

본 논문은 예이츠와 김종길 시에 나타난 ‘비극적 환희’를 연구한 논문이 다. 두 시인은 각자의 어려움에도 불구하고 ‘비극적 환희’로 극복하려는 공통점을 지 닌다. 비록 산 시기와 장소는 다르지만 ‘존재의 통합’ 내지 ‘자기실현’을 이루려고 각 자의 시에서 ‘비극적 환희’를 공유한 것 같다. 이에 논자는 그들의 시에 나타난 어려 움을 ‘비극적 환희’로 수용하면서 최선을 다한 두 시인의 친연성을 탐구한다.
