This paper focuses on analyzing the data especially related to language amongst the impressions about China by the Western missionaries in China during the Ming and the Qing Dynasty. If one was to take a more in-depth look into the actual writings of their scripts, one could infer that the culture shock was not that massive compared to what the actual Hans and the Manchurians had to adapt to on the part of the Western missionaries in terms of the shift of authoritative power between the Ming and the Qing Dynasty. Rather than differentiating the Han language and the Manchurian language from a modern perspective to understand the phenomenon, it would be more important to look at the language perspective from the viewpoint of the Western missionaries who were foreigners at that time and to excavate more objective data related to this and studying them minutely.

본고는 명대와 청대 중국에서 활동한 서양 선교사들의 자료를 통해 살펴본 중국에 대한 인식, 그 중에서도 특히 언어에 관련된 자료들을 분석하는 것에 중점을 두고 있다. 명청대 지배층이 달라진 부분에 있어서 서양 선교사들이 받아들인 한어와 만주어는 정작 한족과 만주족이었던 당사자들이 수용해야 했던 것에 비해 문화적인 충격이 그다지 높지 않았음을 유추해 볼 수 있다. 선교사들의 자료에 보이는 한어와 만주어에 대한 기록 만으로만 판단해보면, 만주어가 한어에 비해 학습하기 용이했다는 것을 알 수 있다. 본문의 내용에서 살필 수 있듯이, 청대에는 한어와 만주어에 모두 능통한 선교사들이 많았다. 현재의 시각으로 한어와 만주어를 이분화 시켜서 이해하기 보다는 당시 외국인이었던 서양 선교사들의 눈에 비친 언어관을 통해 두 언어를 객관적으로 바라보고 이에 관련된 보다 구체적인 자료들을 발굴하고 면밀히 고찰하는 일이 중요하다.
