The Effects of Parents’ and Peers' Appearance Management Behaviors and Criticisms about Appearance on Adaptive Eating among Female College Students - The Mediating Role of Appearance Appreciation -

The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effects of appearance appreciation in the relationship between parents' and peers' appearance management behaviors and criticism about appearance and adaptive eating. Participants were 236 female college students. All participants completed the questionnaires, including the Parents' Appearance Management Behavior Scale, Peers' Appearance Management Behavior Scale, Criticism about Appearance from Parents Scale, Criticism about Appearance from Peers Scale, Appearance Appreciation Scale, and Adaptive Eating Scale. The data were analyzed with a structural equation modeling using the AMOS program. The results of the study are summarized as follows: First, The relationship between parents appearance management behavior and adaptive eating was not mediated by appearance appreciation. Second, The relationship between peers appearance management behavior and adaptive eating was mediated by appearance appreciation. Third, The relationship between criticism about appearance from parents and adaptive eating was not mediated by appearance appreciation. Fourth, The relationship between criticism about appearance from peers and adaptive eating was not mediated by appearance appreciation. These results showed that appearance appreciation mediated the relationship between peers appearance management behavior and adaptive eating. The findings of this study suggest informations to improve female college students' adaptive eating.
