The paradigm of missional church emerges in this age of changes, when the traditional ecclesiological paradigm seems to globally persist no more. Such missional ecclesiology also influences Korean churches to contribute to shape Korean contextualization of missional churches. This article is for the evaluation of missional church paradigm of Alan J. Roxburgh, who is one of the well-known experts on missional church, in order to comprehend the strengths of the latest Western understanding of missional church, and to critically reflect its weaknesses. Roxburgh and his co-authors are regarded as the leading professionals who radically challenge the innovation of the traditional church models, and suggest the new North American model of missional church. On one hand, this article tried to explain Roxburgh’s contributions by evaluating his model of missional church through his significant recent writings as follows: the appropriateness of missionality of the future churches, the creative imagination of missional church, the challenge of the concept and application of new place and space, the necessity of the new organization, and the practical action plans of doing missional church. On the other hand, the problems are suggested as the ambiguity of the definition of missional church paradigm, the dualism of attractionality and missionality, the extreme negative approach for the traditional paradigm, and the extreme generalization of missional paradigm, etc. Moreover, this article suggest some solutions as follows: the continuity between the traditional church structures and the missional church models, the pastoral applications by critical contextualizations, the dialectical development of attractional missionality, etc. Consequently, it is significant to attempt the contextualization as well as the proper maintenance of the traditional pastoral model in addition to the missional one, rather than the radical discontinuity of the past models, for the development of missional church paradigm in the future. It should be dealt with the worldview of both/and rather than either/or. Additionally, the issues of place, space, and structure of the missional churches are expected to be researched further in the future context.

전통적 교회 패러다임의 존속에 대한 의문이 팽배하고 있는 이 변화의 시대에 미 래 교회의 대안 혹은 교회 본질의 회복으로서 선교적 교회론이 등장하였다. 이러한 선교적 교회 패러다임은 역시 한국 교회에도 영향을 끼치며 한국적 선교적 교회론의 적용과 형성에 기여하고 있다. 본고는 최근 주목받고 있는 선교적 교회론의 이해를 돕고자 이에 대한 전문가 중의 한 인물인 록스버그 (Alan J. Roxburgh)을 평가하는 것이다. 그 목적은 그를 이해하고 평가함으로써 최근 영미권의 선교적 교회에 대한 이해와 비판적 접근을 모색하고자 하는 것이다. 록스버그 (Roxburgh)는 여러 그의 공 저자들과 함께 미래 북미권 지역의 교회적 대안을 비교적 혁신적으로 주장하는 사람 중의 하나로서 기존의 전통적 교회의 탈피를 요구하고 있다. 그의 주요 저작들을 통 하여 대체로 다음과 같은 평가들을 도출하였다. 그의 기여할 만한 점은 선교적 교회 의 선교성 (missionality)에 대한 당위적 도전, 미래 교회에 대한 창의적 상상력, 이 시대 교회의 새로운 공간의 개념에 대한 도전, 선교적 교회의 새로운 조직과 구조의 필요성의 유지, 그리고 실천적 제안 등이다. 그리고 선교적 교회론의 개념의 모호성의 문제, ‘끌어당김’과 ‘나아감’의 이분법과 공간의 문제, 전통적 교회 구조에 대한 지나친 부정적 접근, 선교적 교회의 극단적 보편화의 문제 등을 문제점들로 다루었다. 본고는 이에 대하여 다음과 같은 제안을 하였다: 전통적 교회와 선교적 교회 간의 연속성, 기존 목회 패러다임의 선교적 적용, 그리고 구심적 선교성 (attractional missionality) 의 변증법적 발전을 위한 제안 등이다. 결론적으로 교회론의 본질적 회복과 함께 새 로운 시대 상황에서의 상황화적 선교적 교회론의 개발은 과거 전통적 교회 모델과의 일방적 단절이 아닌 지속되어야 할 교회의 유일적 기능과 본질을 적절히 유지 및 상 황화하는, 즉 과거의 미래 교회 모델의 불연속성과 연속성의 조화 및 변증법적 발전 을 모색하는 것이 중요하다. 그리고 교회의 장소에 대한 새로운 이해와 구조에 대한 새로운 개발 등이 실천신학적으로 다루어져야 할 것이다.
