This research examines forgiveness presented in the musical film, Les Misérables(2012), directed by Tom Hooper. It focuses on the contents of the film rather than the forms and techniques of the film, the contents which have fascinated many researchers. That is, it delves into the psychological aspects of the film rather than its techniques and artistic aspects. The purpose of this study is to clarify forgiveness as the healing method of anger and resentment by analyzing and interpreting the contents of the film. Another purpose is to help counselee and people who want to overcome the invisible destructive desires toward other people. In order to do this, chapter 2 illustrates the historical background and story of Les Misérables. Chapter 3 analyzes and interprets Les Misérables from the perspective of forgiveness. It describes how the psyche of Jean Valjean transforms and how he changes his circumstances. Then, chapter 4 scrutinizes how counselors use this in the settings of personal and group counselling and lecturers. It finds a possibility of forgiveness by overcoming anger and resentment, which is based on love and mercy, rather than by denying the desire of revenge when one is unfairly hurt.

본 논문은 용서(forgiveness)에 관한 연구이다. 본 연구는 용서의 관점에서 후퍼(Tom Hooper) 감독의 뮤지컬 영화 Les Misérables(2012)에 대한 해석학적인 작업으로서, 영화 Les Misérables의 예술적 가치인 형식과 기법 또는 예술의 미학적 측면보다는 연구자들을 더 매혹시켰던 예술작품의 내용, 심리적 측면을 중심으로 연구가 진행된다. 본 연구의 목적은 상처와 분노를 치료하는 기제로서의 용서에 관한 연구를 밝히기 위해 영화 Les Misérables를 분석하고 해석한다. 이를 통해 분노와 복수심에 가득차서 자신의 삶뿐만 아니라, 주변 사람들을 향한 파괴적인 삶의 끝이 보이지 않은 상황을 끝내거나 탈출하고자 하는 내담자와 사람들을 돕기 위한 것이다. 이를 위해 논문의 두 번째 장에서는 영화 Les Misérables의 시대적 배경과 이야기의 줄거리를 살펴본다. 논문의 세 번째 장에서는 영화 Les Misérables를 용서의 관점에서 분석하고 해석한다. 심리적 상처와 분노 속에 사로 잡혔던 장발장(Jean Valjean)이 어떤 과정을 통해 변화되고, 또 어떻게 주변을 변화시켜 가는지를 보게 된다. 그 과정을 통해서 용서가 우리의 삶을 어떻게 변화시켜나가는지를 발견하게 된다. 그 후 논문의 네 번째 장에서는 용서의 주제가 필요한 내담자와 용서 교육 및 집단상담 장면에서 영화 Les Misérables를 어떻게 임상적으로 활용할 수 있을지에 대해서 간략히 살펴본다. 본 연구는 영화 Les Misérables를 용서의 관점에서 분석함으로써 부당하게 상처를 받았을 경우, 복수하고 싶어 하는 심정을 부정함으로써 복수심을 극복하는 것이 아니라, 오히려 가해자에게 자비와 사랑을 제공하려고 노력함으로써 분노를 극복하려 한다면 용서는 가능하다는 점을 확인할 수 있다.
