This study looks at the life and independence movements of Park Min-oh, a Jungang high school. Park Min-oh is from the central school, a predecessor of Chungang High School, but is known to have graduated from Jungang School, a former graduate of Dongguk University. Park Min-oh is from Namhae-Gun and is Park No-young. He appears to have been promoted from Tongdosa to a Buddhist priest who was given the title of “Min-oh.” He graduated from Myongshin Middle School while staying at Tongdosa. Later, he entered the central school with the introduction of Yoon Chi-oh, who was deeply involved in the governorship and Chung-Ang High School. He went to high school with the help of Kim Seong-su, the founder of Chung-Ang High School. However, the hostess room of Jungang High School was the center of the 3·1 Independence Movement. He participated in the preparation of the exercise and joined the Tagol Park as a junior high school leader during the March 1 Independence Movement. After that, he also participated in the 3·1 Independence movement that took place in Seoul. He joined forces with Shin Sang-wan, a student of Dongguk University, and Baek Seong-wook, to stage the 3·1 Independence Movement. In addition, he participated in publishing secret Newspaper “Hyuksibgongbo”, along with Dongguk University student Kim Bong-shin. And he participated in the production of secret Newspaper “Jayusinjongbo” with students from Paejae High School. As things got worse, he went to Shanghai with students from the same school, Lim Bong-soon and Dongguk University, Kim Bong-shin, to connect with Ahn Chang-ho, the head of the interim government. He went to the United States via Nanjing, China, when that was not allowed. While staying in the U.S., he wrote articles for local newspapers to break the realities of the Buddhist community, most of whom devoted himself to lectures and writing. He entered a famous university in the U.S. and earned his first doctorate from Harvard University as a priest. He was then called Eastern Mark Twain, reincarnating several literature books.

본 논문은 중앙학교 박민오의 생애와 독립운동에 대하여 살펴본 연구이다. 박민오는 중앙고 전신인 중앙학교 출신이지만 동국대 전신인 중앙학림 출신으로 착란되어 연구되고 있다. 박민오는 남해군 출신 박노영으로 통도사에서 출가하여 ‘민오’라는 법명을 받은 듯하다. 박민오는 통도사 부속 명신학교를 다니다가 통도사의 주지 구하와 중앙학교와 관련이 깊은 윤치오의 소개로 중앙학교의 실질적인 (재)창립자인 인촌 김성수에게 인도되어 중앙학교에 다녔다. 박민오는 3·1운동의 책원지로 알려진 중앙학교의 숙직실을 중심으로 3·1운동 준비에 참여하였다. 3·1 학생운동 당시 학년 급장으로서 탑골공원에 주도적으로 함께 하였으며, 그 후에 서울 시내에서 전개된 독립운동에도 동참하였다. 박민오는 중앙학림의 총참모 신상완과 중앙학림의 백성욱과 함께 중앙 참모가 되어 3·1운동을 진두 지휘를 하였다. 또한 중앙학림의 김봉신 등과 함께 지하신문인 <革新公報>와 배재고보 학생들과 함께 <자유신종보>의 제작 및 배포에 참여하였다. <혁신공보>의 운영이 어려워지자 박민오는 동급생인 임봉순과 중앙학림 김봉신 등과 함께 상해 임시정부 내무총장이었던 안창호와 연계하는 등 독립운동에 적극적으로 나섰으나, 사정이 여의치 않게 되자 중국 남경을 거쳐 미국 뉴욕으로 건너갔다. 그 후 하버드대에서 박사학위를 취득한 후 미국에서 신지식인으로 살다가 생을 마감하였다. 이와 같이 박민오는 통도사 승려로서 현 서울 중앙고인 중앙학교에서 수학하였다. 3·1학생운동을 주도하고 독립운동 지하신문을 제작 및 배포하는 등 독립운동을 전개한 일제강점기 불교계 독립운동가였다.
