Choe Chi-won(崔致遠) is being admired and respected even in China as well as in the country, and is a figure who had influence upon both our culture and Chinese culture. Accordingly, an event and others for remembering him are being held both at home and in China. Among them, Yeongam in Jeollanam-do Province is being recorded in Lee Jung-hwan's 『Taekriji(擇里志, Geography of Korea)』, as a place that Choe Chi-won left on a voyage to China. And this record leads to being revealed more specifically the aspect of an exchange between Silla and China in those days as well as Choe Chi-won. Hence, Choe Chi-won needs to be emphasized as a figure of being associated with the district in Yeongam. However, an event or an effort relevant to Choe Chi-won cannot be found in Yeongam. This is because an interest is concentrated on Wang In(王仁) who moved to Japan from Baekje as a person who represents Yeongam, above all. Still, the images in Wang In(王仁) and Choe Chi-won(崔致遠) have a similar aspect. Both of them are a figure who moved, respectively, to Japan and China from the nation. Hence, connecting an interest in Wang In(王仁) with Choe Chi-won(崔致遠) leads to being further clarified the regional identity of Yeongam. That is to say, it becomes the district of having an international character, which proceeds with advancing to other country from the nation, beginning from the Three Kingdom Period in the past. 최치원(崔致遠)은 우리의 문화뿐 아니라 중국에도 영향을 미친 인물이기에, 그를 기억하기 위한 행사 등도 국내와 중국에서 모두 진행되고 있다. 특히 국내에서는 최치원이 남긴 흔적을 지역의 중요한 문화자산으로 관리하거나 홍보에 활용하고 있다. 이 가운데 전라남도 영암(靈巖)은 최치원이 중국으로 항해를 떠난 장소로 이중환(李重煥)의 『택리지(擇里志)』에 기록되어 있으며, 이 기록을 통해 최치원의 행적뿐만 아니라 당시 신라와 중국 사이의 항해 경로를 추정하는 근거가 된다. 그런데 영암에서는 최치원과 관련된 행사나 그를 기억하기 위한 과정이 활성화되어 있지 않다. 이는 영암을 대표하는 인물로 백제에서 일본으로 건너간 왕인(王仁)에게 관심이 집중되어 있기 때문이다. 그런데 왕인과 최치원은 행적에 있어서 공통적인 성격을 찾을 수 있다. 모두 국내에서 일본과 중국으로 각각 건너간 인물이기 때문이다. 따라서 왕인에 대한 지역에서의 관심을 최치원과 연계한다면, 영암의 지역적 정체성은 오늘날의 영암에 대한 일반적 인식과 비교하여 달라진다. 과거 삼국시대부터 다른 나라로 나아갈 수 있었던 국제적인 성격을 지닌 장소로서의 성격이 구체적으로 드러날 수 있어서이다. 따라서 이러한 연관성을 드러내기 위해서는 지역의 역사적 문화적 성격과 연계된 다각적인 스토리텔링이 필요하다.
