In Wonju area, Donghak had been introduced earlier with many believers and their struggles were remarkable during the period of Donghak Peasant Revolution. Especially, the activities of Donghak leaders were outstanding in Wonju including Suk Ryong Han, Hwa Bo Kim, Woo Gun Jang, Sam Suk Park, Ki Soon Kim, Jin Hae Kim, Jum Bok Kim, Jae Kyu Son, Jae Poong An, and so on. They leaded Founder’s Remission Movements such as Gongju Assembly, Gwanhwamun Joint Appeal, and Boun Assembly. Hence, struggling was serious during the period of Donghak Peasant Revolution and casualties were significant during the suppression period. To date, few studies on the histories of Donghak Peasant Revolution in Wonju had been conducted, so little was known on the history. Hence, no introduction related to Donghak was found in the homepage of Wonju County Office and no introduction on the historical site related to Donghak Peasant Revolution was in the travel map. In contrast, a variety of histories and historical site introduction related to Donghak Peasant Revolution were established in the homepages of Jungeup City Hall, Gochang County Office, Namwon City Hall, and Boun County Office. To expand the base on the history of Donghak Peasant Revolution in Wonju, studies on the local history should be preceded and the data should be uploaded in the homepage so as to share the information with the local inhabitants. Developmental steps of cultural contents can be summarized as 1) planning of cultural contents 2) collection and summary of basic historical records, and 3) development and promotion of cultural contents. Utilization plans of cultural contents on Donghak Peasant Revolution in Wonju are first to upload the study outcomes on the local history in the homepage of City Hall and to establish the signboards or signing stone on the newly known historical sites together with introduction of existing facilities. Related cases can be referred to the cultural contents utilization or homepages of Jungeup City Hall, Gochang County Office, Namwon City Hall, and Boun County Office. The core of the cultural contents is characterizations of the region. For example, various plans of cultural contents utilization should be prepared such as establishment of ‘experiencing tracking road of Shi Hyung Choi’s road of hardships’ from Songgol to Yeoju port upon making some themes, developments of Donghak travel map, leaflet on the history, cartoon and animation by storytelling, CDs, and so on.

이 연구의 목적은 원주지역의 동학 및 동학농민혁명사의 전개과정을 살피고, 문화 콘텐츠 활용 방안을 모색하는데 있다. 연구 내용은 다음과 같다. 원주지역에 동학이 일찍부터 유입되어 동학교도가 많았고, 동학농민혁명 시기에는 이들의 투쟁이 두드러졌다. 특히 원주지역에는 한석룡 김화보 장우근 박삼석 김기순 김진해 김점복 손재규 안재풍 등동학지도자의 활동이 두드러졌다. 이들은 공주취회, 광화문복합상소, 보은취회와 같은 교조신원운동에 주도적으로 활동에 나섰다. 따라서 동학농민혁명시기에 투쟁이 치열했으며, 토벌 시기에는 인명 피해가 켰다. 현재 원주 지역 동학농민혁명사 연구는 제대로 이뤄지지 않았으며, 따라서원주 동학농민혁명사에 대해 별로 알려지지 않았다. 따라서 원주군청 홈페이지에 동학 관련 소개가 없고, 관광지도에는 동학농민혁명사 관련 유적지 소개가 없다. 이에 비해 정읍시청, 고창군청, 남원시청, 보은군청 등 홈페이지에는동학농민혁명사 관련 역사와 유적이 다양하게 폭넓게 소개되어 있어서 대조를 보이고 있다. 원주 지역의 동학농민혁명사에 대한 저변 확대를 위해서는 향토사학 연구가 선행되어야하며, 홈페이지에 자료를 올려 지역 주민과 정보를 공유해야 한다. 문화콘텐츠 구축 단계는 ① 문화콘텐츠 계획② 기본 사료 수집 정리 ③ 문화콘텐츠 구축과 홍보 단계로 정리 된다. 원주지역 동학농민혁명사 문화콘텐츠 활용 방안은 첫째, 지역 역사 연구 결과를 시청 홈페이지에 탑재하고, 기왕에 건립된 시설에 대한 소개와 함께, 새롭게 알려진 사적지에 대한 안내 표지판이나 표지 석을 설치해야 한다. 이에대한 사례는 미흡하나마 동학농민혁명의 중심 지역이라 할 정읍시청, 고창군청, 남원시청, 보은군청의 문화콘텐츠 활용이나 홈페이지를 참고할 만하다. 이 연구의 결과에 대한 기대효과는 문화콘텐츠의 지역적인 특성화이다. 예컨대 일정한 테마를 세워 원주 송골에서 여주나루까지 ‘최시형 고난의 길 체험 둘레길’ 제정, 동학유적 관광지도 제작, 지역 역사에 대한 리플렛, 스토리텔링에 따른 만화 및 동영상 제작, CD매체 제작 등 다양한 문화 콘텐츠 활용 방안이 마련되어야 한다.
