In today’s rapidly changing world, both universities and the spread of knowledge are undergoing fundamental changes. The situation that we now face in the 21st century, due to digitalization and the internet, is similar to that which was faced in the 16th century, when the printing revolution changed the root and access of knowledge. If this is so, will the notion of the university disappear, in front of the 2nd knowledge revolution or will it go through an intellectual transformation? Akita International University, was founded in 2004 just outside the city of Akita. It is seen as a pioneering experiment and is currently the most popular university in Japan. The curriculum of the University can be simplified into two axes; international and liberal. This paper presents the direction and potential role that universities may play, by critically reviewing the implication of ‘success’ at Akita International University. Interestingly, during this current crisis faced by universities, universities have now turned their eyes towards the Liberal Arts Colleges, which is seen as an enhancement of the international liberal arts education. In other words, a new era of both the Fourth Industrial Revolution and Neoliberalism, is paradoxically calling for a revival of the Liberal Arts as both an ‘international’ and ‘liberal’ method of restoring the attitude of human education. In fact, the idea of the university is originally ‘international=universal’ and it is ‘liberal=convergent’ in principle. It is therefore very suggestive that the desirable talent and education required by the new age is the nature of the university.

오늘날 급변하는 세계 속에서 대학과 지식은 근본적인 변화를 요구받고 있다. 대학의 위기가 말해지는 오늘날 다시 말해 디지털화와 인터넷 보급으로 21세기 우리가 직면한 상황은 그야말로 인쇄혁명이 지식의 근저를 바꾸었던 16세기와 유사하다. 그렇다면 제2의 지식혁명 또는 지적전환 앞에서 대학은 이대로 사라지고 말 것인가. 2004년 아키타 외곽에 새로이 설립된 국제교양대학(Akita International University)은 선구적인 실험으로 현재 일본에서 가장 주목받는 대학이다. 국제교양대학의 교육 프로그램은 이름 그대로 ‘국제’와 ‘교양’이라는 두 개의 축으로 단순화할 수 있다. 본고는 국제교양대학 ‘성공’의 함의를 비판적으로 고찰함으로써 21세기 대학이 나아가야 할 방향과 역할을 제시하고자 한다. 흥미로운 것은 대학의 위기가 말해지는 가운데에 대학들이 눈을 돌린 곳이 리버럴아츠칼리지 즉 국제교양교육의 강화라는 사실이다. 다시 말해 4차 산업혁명 또는 신자유주의라는 새로운 시대가 역설적이게도 ‘국제’ ‘교양’으로서의 리버럴아츠의 부활과 인문교육 본연의 자세를 회복할 것을 요구하고 있다고 할 수 있다. 사실 대학은 태생적으로 ‘국제=보편’적이자 원리적으로 ‘교양=융합’적인 존재였다. 새로운 시대가 요구하게 된 바람직한 인재상과 교육이 바로 대학 본연의 자세라는 점은 매우 시사적이다.
