Human decision is highly depending on environmental circumstances around him or her. Also, human decision is not only rational but also socially constructed. Therefore, even though people are in the same situation, their decisions could be different. Korean migrant families’ housing decision in the United States is no exception. Most of them are likely to be in similar situations because their highest priority is to settle in the U.S. city where they plan to live temporarily, but without specific knowledge about the region, people, and American culture. Second, they are sharing the same national culture. However, their decisions are not the same but rather different. By utilizing the data from field observations and interviews based on grounded theory, we find the answer about how Korean families choose their residence in the United States and arrive at different decisions in terms of information gathering and decision-making. Even though Korean students or visiting scholars are not permanent immigrants, their concerns about relocating in the U.S. is similar to newly arrived immigrants’ one in Korea. Therefore, we expect our qualitative study will give useful insights into analysing the behaviours of foreign migrant families in Korea in terms of information acquisition and buying decision. And furthermore, we hope our qualitative study can contribute to establishing the effective policies for the multi-cultural families, especially for their early settlement here.

인간의 모든 결정은 그 사람이 처한 환경적 요인에 밀접히 연관되어있다. 또한 사람의 의사결정은 합리적이기만 한 것이 아니며 때로는 사회적으로 형성되기도 한다. 그러므로 동일한 상항에 놓여있다고 하더라고 그들의 의사결정은 매우 다를 수 있다. 이러한 양상은 한국에서 미국으로 단기로 이주하는 가족이 미국 내 거주지 선정 의사결정을 하는데 있어서도 예외 없이 나타난다. 대부분의 경우, 미국문화 및 해당지역에 대한 충분한 정보가 없는 상태에서 거주하기로 되어 있는 동네에 잘 적응해야하는 비슷한 상황에 직면해 있는 것이 사실이며 동일한 문화적 성향 역시 가지고 있다. 그러나 이들의 의사결정은 제각각이다. 따라서 현지관찰 (Field Observation) 및 인터뷰 (Interview)자료를 바탕으로 근거이론(Grounded theory)에 의거하여 한국가족들의 왜 상이한 결론에 도달하게 되는지, 정보수집 및 의사결정 과정을 중심으로 알아보고자 하였다. 이 연구의 대상이 된, 미국으로 단기 이주한 한국가족들이 영속적인 이민자들은 아닐지라도, 이들이 새로운 곳에 정착하면서 느낀 걱정 및 고려 사항들은 한국에 새로이 입국하는 외국 이주민들의 그것들과 다르지 않을 것이라고 생각한다. 따라서 이 연구가 현재 늘어나고 있는 우리나라 입국 외국인 가족들의 한국정착을 위한 정보수집 및 주요 구매의사결정 행태들을 분석하는데 의미 있는 자료로, 더 나아가 다문화 정책수립에 도움이 되는 자료로 사용되길 기대해본다.
