The purpose of this paper is to critically examine M. Walzer's just war theory and to clarify its limitations. His theory inherits the traditional just war theories and interprets them to conform to the reality of modern international society. Walzer has been developed his theory through a kind of practical casuistry, and laid the foundations of it on the individual rights to life and liberty. He especially emphasizes the principle of the right cause in jus ad bellum and the principles of proportionality and discrimination in jus in bello. Although his theory has contributed very much to the discourses on war, it has some limitations: the non-consistence of the bases of just war principles, the failure to consider the environmental issues and insufficient discussions of jus post bello. Despite the limitations and probability of misuse of his just war theory, considerable attention should be paid to it for the peace of the international society.
