EA carries all kinds of solutions in its bag, rendering it extremely complex and difficult to comprehend for the practitioners. An effective way to bypass such complexity in the understanding of EA is to take a contextual approach to EA. A contextual approach places EA in a particular context, namely in an enterprise, and draws and defines its characteristics in terms of the context. This contextual approach is contrasted to the more traditional content approach, where EA is defined in terms of the content, those solution elements that EA carries in its bag. A contextual understanding of EA is also a problem centric understanding of EA. It focuses upon what enterprise problems EA addresses rather than upon what solutions EA develops for the problems. A contextual approach to EA, therefore, is nothing but a theory of problems for EA. Its premise is that, for an effective understanding of EA, a theory of problems should precede a theory of solutions. This paper introduces a contextual understanding of EA. Enterprise as a context of EA is introduced and its problems for EA examined. Implications for and consequences of a contextual approach to EA discussed.

EA를 이해하는데 있어서 두 가지 접근이 가능하다. 하나는 EA 자체를 들여다 보면서 그 내용(content)을 이해하고자 하는 것이다. 반면 EA에 대한 소위 "상황적" 이해도 가능하다. 상황적 이해란 EA를 어떤 상황(context) 안에 놓고 그 상황의 관점에서 EA를 파악하는 것이다. 이러한 EA에 대한 상황적 접근은 EA의 내용에 뛰어들기에 앞서서 먼저 EA 전체의 모습을 파악하는데 도움이 된다. EA를 구성하는 내용은 방대하고 복잡하다. EA의 목적, 동기, 형상 등에 대한 전체적 밑그림 없이 섣불리 뛰어들었다가는 자칫 그 내용이 가진 복잡성에 매몰되기 쉽다. 그래서 EA에 대한 상황적 이해는 EA에 대한 내용적 이해에 앞서서 이루어지는 것이 바람직하다. 본 논문은 EA에 대한 상황적 이해를 도모한다. EA에 대한 상황적 이해란 보다 구체적으로는 엔터프라이즈가 발생시키는 "문제"에 대한 이해로서, 본 논문은 EA를 엔터프라이즈라는 컨텍스트 안에 놓고, 엔터프라이즈가 가진 문제를 다양한 관점에서 고찰하고 이러한 문제의 관점에서 EA의 핵심역할과 기능을 조명한다. 본 논문은 결론적으로 EA 이해를 위해서는 EA란 솔루션에 대한 이론(theory of solution)에 앞서 이러한 솔루션을 촉발시키는 엔터프라이즈 문제에 대한 이론 (theory of problem)이 먼저 구축되어야 함을 주장한다.
