Lately, the important phenomenon of Korean petroglyphs is that petroglyphs in historical period are examinded. Even data is small in number, it will be examinded consistently. Thus, it need to be discussed how to consider this phenomenon from an angle of study on petroglyphs. Condition which could be disscussed in the area of study on petroglyphs, that will be limited to prehistoric ages. And also, that should be expressed on living rock. With this point in view, the data on petroglyphs of historical period is outside of range. However, from the point of view of expression, generally the data on petroglyphs of historical period have common methods and object of prehistoric’s. Thus, the data on petroglyphs of historical period should be treated as the data on petroglyphs of prehistoric ages due to the fact that the data succeeded to consciousness structure of prehistoric’s.

근년에 들어 한국암각화에 있어서 중요한 현상하나는 역사시대에 제작된 암각자료가 조사되 고 있다는 점이다. 그러한 자료는 수적으로는 얼마 되지 않는다. 하지만 앞으로도 조사는 이어 질 것으로 보이고, 따라서 현 시점에서 암각화연구의 측면에서 이를 어떻게 취급해야 할 것인가 를 미리 살펴 둘 필요가 있다고 판단된다. 암각화의 영역에서 논의되는 명제라고 한다면 그것은 먼저 선사시대를 중심으로 하는 제한적 시간 폭을 갖는다는 점이다. 이와 함께 살아있는 자연의 바위에 표현되어야 한다는 명제가 있다. 여기에 비춰봤을 때 역사시대의 암각자료는 시간적 틀이라는 명제에서 크게 벗어나 있다. 그러 나 거기서 발견되는 암각화 표현상의 속성으로 봤을 때 전반적으로는 선사 암각화의 특성으로서 표현주제나 수단, 목적을 같이 하고 있다. 그렇기 때문에 역사시대의 암각화가 비록 암각화시대 와는 판이하게 달라진 문화사적 환경에서 나타난 예외적인 표현 형태라고 할지라도, 선사시대 의 의식구조의 연속선상에 있다고 하는 관점에서 포괄적으로 취급되어야 할 것으로 판단된다.
